1. Yes
At the time of its unveiling, it was considered the saving of the world as we know it. It was viewed as a terrible force, used for good, because we were wise, and believed in truth, justice, and the American Way. And had we not gotten it first, we would all be speaking German on the east coast, Japanese on the west.

Back then, we had "moral certitude." It's the precise theme that chimpy is trying to resurrect. Only problem is, he's faking it. We had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into WW2, history books glossing that bit over notwithstanding, but once we did it, we were IN it.

Nowadays, war is just a distraction from reality TV. Easy to avoid with a quick click of the remote.

3. some on here continue to condemn the dropping of EITHER bomb
but the 2nd one in particular

i say, despite the terrible destruction, they saved us from a nuclear holocaust.

regrettable, but necessary

5. Well, I won't opine on actually DROPPING the bomb...
...but I think the project itself must have been very cool.

After all, how often do REAL prototype devices look EXACTLY like props from a bad 1950s SF film?
Good or Evil, that thing is COOL!
