With all the "miraculous sightings" on underpasses, potatoes, etc....

You'd think that the world would be living in perfect harmony by now. I mean, it's a SIGN when god puts a crucifix inside a potato, or places a vision of the Virgin MAry on a highway underpass, right? Ususally, those true believers try to tell us that it's a sign that god wants us to unite or that world peace is on it's way or that the Second Coming is at hand....or that it's at least a "miracle."

These things have been happening for years. I worked in a place in NAshville that discovered the Mother Teresa Cinnamon Bun, for instance. We, the US, voted Bush into the White House that year. Some bloody miracle.

So....if god's trying to TELL us something, why is the world continuing to spiral out of control and get meaner and uglier?

Could it be that those visions are, um, mere coincidence?

God is telling these fundies to stop killing people in Iraq, stop judging people, treat each other well, love thy neighbor and a lot of the other things they have been doing against God.
Unfortunately, all of these fundies see these being a sign from God to cash in on Ebay. I bet God is pissed.

In some ways, I think it is a collective psychosis brought about by the insecurity of modern life. They need to see patterns in order to feel in control of their world or to make sense of the insensible.

Most governments know about the tendency of humans to react to fear and insecurity in this way and ruthlessly exploit it. It's not lost on them that religion is a powerful tool for social control.

Religion (and seeing "signs" of the presence of the divine) is the salve for the wound of being human in an inhumane world.

and so many people are so overwhelmed mentally, physically and emotionally these days that they desperately need a simplistic supernatural intervention to "save" them.
