Question re: prescription reaction.
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 01:15 PM by Bunny
About two weeks ago, I broke my tailbone. Took some meds, started to feel better, then reinjured it about a week ago. Lots of pain, the original pills weren't working that well anymore.

Finally called the doctor yesterday, he prescribed Tramadol. I took one pill last night, and had a bad reaction to it - dizzyness, "woozy-ness", blurred vision, nausea, diarrhea, headache. Spent most of the night lying awake, because every time I closed my eyes the room began to spin. I don't feel all that much better now, and it's been 17 hours since I took that pill.

I just called the doctor back, described my symptoms, and asked if I should be concerned about this reaction. Guess what he told me? TAKE ONLY HALF A PILL THIS TIME!

Does it make sense to anyone to take MORE of the medicine that has made me so sick? I told him thanks, but I'd pass. I guess I'll just wait this out. But does this make any sense?

Mods - this is not a medical advice question - I've already consulted the doctor. I'm just curious about this.

1. Call the pharmacist...
They should be able to tell you if it is a reaction or not.
Good Luck...hope you feel better.

2. not a classical allergic reaction
sounds more like a hypersensitivity problem, although 17 hours is way past the serum half-life of Tramadol. Did you drink grapefruit juice within 24 hours of taking the drug? Some foods can make your body fail to absorb and excrete the drug, leaving it floating around in your blood for a lot longer than expected.

Tramadol is usually given for surgical and cancer pain. It may just be too much for the pain level you have. You should probably switch to something milder plus an anti-inflammatory.

4. Yes, it does. If the doctor has
told you to take only half a pill, he's correcting the dosage amount based on the knowledge he now has about your body's reaction to the drug; it is possible that your body is reacting to the amount of the drug it has to process, not the fact of the drug itself in your systems. I'm not a doctor, but I would follow your doc's advice. And the above suggestion to consult with the pharmacist is a good one also.

5. I had two reactions to drugs I took
One was my birth control.. had optical migranes from it.

The other was from Celexa for my anxiety.. doc raised it from 10mg to 20 and I started having the same symptoms you did.. I also had heart palpitations.

11. If my cat looked like that, I'd be on antianxiety drugs too!
I shure it's a sweet kitty and all, but *geez* that cat gives me the creeps!

And I apologize in advance for being a jerkface.

6. Thanks everyone.
I called the pharmacist. He said the effects of the drug should be out of my system within the next 6 hours or so. I'm just going to wait this out - I don't want to take any more of that medicine! :scared:

7. Send it to me if you're not going to use it!
Shouldn't let stuff like that go to waste.

9. I've been taking Tramadol for back pain for about 5 years
I've never had any side effects from it. It's the ONLY thing that will get rid of my pain without making me drowsy/dizzy/nauseated.

Sorry to hear you had a bad reaction to it -- it's been a life-saver for me.

Peace,
Bella

10. Sounds to me that you were just sensitive to it
In other words, you took too much. It can be unpleasant, as you found out. His advice is probably right.
