T-Shirt Ban Causes Stir At Rural Florida Public School
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 01:16 PM by matcom
<snip>

BAKER, Fla. -- Two seniors at this rural Florida Panhandle community's only public school have been suspended and others were punished after they violated their principal's ban on T-shirts that read "Kiss Our Class Good-bye" or "Holy Ship, we're graduating."

When dozens of Baker School students defied the edict by wearing the "Kiss" T-shirt earlier this month they were warned suspensions would follow if they persisted.

"There's an obvious suggestion that many people find offensive," Principal Tom Shipp said. "I guess I might be old-fashioned, but I believe values are important."

Two students were suspended for three days when they wore the "Kiss" shirt again. Other seniors said they received Saturday detention or were sent home to change. The punishment depended on their response such as how promptly they removed the shirts. The school goes from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Diane Jensen said she couldn't believe her 18-year-old son, David, had been suspended and thought the "Kiss" shirts "really aren't that offensive."

"He's never been a troublemaker," she said. "He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, he goes to church. He's not one of those cocky kids."

David said he wanted to prove a point and would do it again.

"The school shouldn't have the arbitrary power to dictate what we wear and don't wear," he said.

1. Values?
Banning shirts that allude to curse words... that's a value?

2. Public Schools have become an excellent training ground
For the coming police state.

By the time many of these kids graduate, they'll assume that warrantless searches and seizures are the norm, individuality must be suppressed in favor of conformity, and authoritarian administrators should control all aspects of their lives, down to the very clothes they wear.

3. LMAO... "He's not one of those cocky kids."
Ms. Jensen please tone down that language.

4. eroding respect for authority
These kids will see this and realize that the school administration is a joke. Citizens obey rules because they understand that they are there for a reason and believe their society is better off for having them. Inmates and the oppressed obey rules for fear of punishment.

These administrators aren't worthy of respect.
