Poll question: Amityville Question: If you found out the house you were going to buy....
Edited on Sat Apr-23-05 01:01 AM by LynneSin
....had a "history" i.e - the house was reputed to be haunted, built over indian burial grounds, murder, etc....would you still buy the home even if that home was a "Dream House"

Me, if I found out someone died in a home - even if it was that was great-great granny who just happen to die of old age - I don't think I could do it.

2. No problem - even if the previous tennant's son offed 6 members of his...
...family in that very home.

And here's the beaut (and this I found perusing the Amityville websites) - the Lutzes actually bought the bedroom furniture left behind by the DeFeos. They let their KIDS sleep in those beds

:scared:

14. Yes, but Jay Anson never got full interviews from the Lutzes
http://www.amityvillefaq.com/hoax.html#ansondiscrep

I mean, I'm not sure what to believe, but I've been perusing websites that are both for & against the hoax. But one thing overwhelmingly found was that Jay Anson had limited contact with the Lutzes and there was some liberal additions made by Anson to make the story more scary

8. The kids all slept face down in their beds, too
Edited on Sat Apr-23-05 01:14 AM by Zuni
I saw the Lutzes give an interview on the Discovery Channel---I don't know about their so-called recantation, but they were pretty definite that something really fucking evil was in that house.

To answer the question---HELL NO. I am into Civil War History and I am SHOCKED that fucking morons buy McMansions built on FUCKING BATTLEFIELDS where 10s of THOUSANDS died. I would never live in a McMansion in the Stonewall Jackson Estates desecrating a Battlefield. :grr:

13. Yes, that's a good point.
Although I could live in a so-called "haunted" house (despite my incredibly overactive imagination), I wouldn't stay in a place that actually desecrated some sacred site--like a historic battlefield or Native American burial ground. My feeling here has nothing to do with the purported ghosts, but rather with the respect that should be accorded such sites.

15. That's a good point. I wouldn't move into a place that willfully
desecrated an area (grey in my opinion, I think the people are contributing to the ecosystem, but I understand the feelings of most people, and respect them). However, it wouldn't be any actual 'fear' of the place that kept me out.

10. Again, no problem. In this particular case, it's mostly a story cooked
up by them and their lawyer (though the killings actually occurred).

However, even if I had to remove the dead bodies myself (an unfortunate task I've had to perform more times than I like to remember) I'd still move in.

Even if I was wrong and had a horrible experience, so what? Everybody is going to die sometime ;)

3. Bigger question.
Would you stay in a house if the walls and stairs started bleeding and a disembodied voice told you to get out. Would you?

12. Well I have never had a ghost do that, BUT
if they did, the shit would be packed and I would be gone. Stuff would be spinning in the air. After tonight at work, I was ready to run for the back door and leave.

20. What about when heavy furniture gets thrown around?
I once had a 100-pound workbench get tossed onto its face across a hallway while I was standing in the next room. Although I didn't actually see the movement, I can attest that I was the only one home at the time. I immediately went into the other room to see what the noise was, and there was no one else around at all. Just this table thrown against the wall.

Given my overactive imagination and deep claustrophobia, I've never understood why that didn't freak me out.

:)

18. Wait, you'd move out the dead bodies yourself to move in and yet...
..you'd move out over a little blood running down the walls.

You're caving in on me

23. Not caving, just admiting it would annoy me. I don't deal well with
people. If someone is in my house, whether they be dead beasties or pranksters, I'd be annoyed. Wouldn't necessarily move out, but the house would be a pain in that situation.

26. Nope. I'm on the lookout for a cheap place, due to having a fixed
income. Doesn't bother me that everyone before me might claim to have seen evil spirits and other nasty beasties.

I don't believe in spirits, ghosts, goblins, leprechauns, etc. Any older house is much more likely to have had someone die in it. The antiseptic hospital death is a relatively recent occurrence.

6. It would bother me
I wouldn't have a problem with a house that somebody died of natural causes in, but murder is a different story. Lots of bad vibes.

9. Actually, I used to live in one. :)
My last place was not "reputed", but it was undoubtedly "haunted" in some form. Everyone noticed it when they visited. Strange figures in hallways, a sense of brooding, even poltergeist activity. Although that's not my favorite way to live, it does make things rather interesting. :)

Of course, if a house has a reputation, that alone could promote some activity, simply because one is expecting it. Along that line, I think that most of what we consider to be "hauntings" is actually a reflection of the attitude and behavior we ourselves bring to the place. IOWs, I think *we* are haunting the houses. :D

My new place is nothing like that, I can assure you. When I lost the lease on the other house, I deliberately took an apartment that's full of light and space. After nearly six years of odd activity, I was ready for a break.

So far, I've only noticed little things happening here. . . .

24. I'm purposively staying up until past 3:15am
so I don't accidently wake up at that time - since that's the witching hour for Amityville.

Only one hour until I can go to bed safely!

the poster had a blonde in the water with the shark behind her - I kept thinking that was me (mind you I was like 10 at the time, plus I closest to water we were was the Susquehanna River)

Have you ever noticed how a calm person can change the entire atmosphere of a room full of people? Or how a frenetic person can inject energy into that same room?

I think emotions extend further out than the perimeter of our skin. And I have no problem with the possibility that they can affect inanimate objects as well. After all, as John Travolta says in Phenomenon, "We're all made of the same stuff."

:)

32. I know what you mean
I was at a bar one time and there was this local band playing some classic rock there. The band asked a guy in the audience who was a friend to come up and sing a couple of songs. The band started in on an old ZZ Top song that rocks and all of the sudden I felt this rush of energy and it was like everybody in the room felt it, too. Everybody got up and started dancing and that guy totally rocked that song. We talked to the guy that sang the song and told him how much we liked it and he said that he never felt that way when singing a song. He said he felt a rush of energy when the band started to play and just sang his heart out.

34. Music is a marvelous way to change energy.
It literally resonates within us, affecting our thoughts and emotions and actions.

I've made a practice of playing CDs of soft or inspiring music every morning while I get ready for work. Classical, soft rock, or even Gregorian Chant can really change my mood.

33. In Olde Town Alexandria, ghosts are to convey are part of the contract.
I took my RE Continuing Education classes from a former attorney who used to talk about ghosts in Olde Towne Alexandria, Va. He said how often ghosts were written into the contracts as to convey with the property. I had not had that come up in my experience.
Then again, an agent in my office in Arlington, Va had listed a house where the person had committed suicide.
Another home was where prostitutes were being murdered.
The rules go back and forth. Sometimes they say that the seller should not be stigmatised...then it is for the buyer and they should be aware this is a stigmatised property.
I wonder if it even varies state to state.
