I think she had an aunt die recently.
Sounds rather ghoulish but whittling off a finger with a pocket knife while sobbing over the casket is probably not beyond the capability of this woman. Then she could have covered her hand with the blanket.
It's workable too, because the woman's fingerprints were probably not on record if she'd never been arrested.
10. I read that theft of saint's relics was common in the middle ages
Someone supposedly bit off the toe of a saint when he was on pilgrimage and brought the toe home so his local cathedral would have an important relic to attract paying pilgrims.
Today, he'd just sue the church for leaving a toe in his communion glass.
