Stupid question about kidney stone-like pain..
I've had kidney stones before, one last year and the other four years ago. The pain they caused was full-on Level 9/10 pain. And they were tiny stones.. the MD estimates that they were probably little tiny 2 or 3mm ones.

But now the pain is back. It's pretty much the exact same place, but nowhere nearly as bad as the first two times. Maybe a 2 or 3, spiking up to 5 a few times a day.

Could this be another one? (wouldn't it be worse?)
God, I hope not.. finals week is coming.. :(

1. Could be a kidney infection.
And the pain could be blood going down the ureter. If there's nothing solid, and the pain isn't so bad, that's most likely the culprit.

During my first one
I was struck in a motel in Key West paralyzed in pain on the bed and figured the maid would find my body in the morning.

A couple of years later I got a recurrence but with a third or half the pain. The 3rd and beyond are less painful. Welcome to the club. x(

2. Yes, it could certaintly be more stones. No way to say if it will be
any better or worse this time.

If you get yourself well hydrated you may be able to pass them. Drink lots of water, and stay away from iced tea or tea in general.

Also, I've heard that 'cornsilk' disolves stones. You may want to ask your doctor about this.

Prayers for you that this will resolve itself without all that pain.

3. Is that really true that iced tea
could give you kidney stones? I gave up iced tea about two months ago but drank at least 3 or 4 bottles of Snapple a day for years. So far, I never had a stone. (knocks on wood)

4. Did you have them smashed with the sonic thingy?
If so, there may be still a piece of the last one remaining. I had a 9mm stone blasted last December but there's still a smaller piece remaining. The Doc hasn't decided yet if it's big enough to be a problem or not.

I'd get it checked out. I know the pain involved, and so do you. It's better to have it taken care of in the early stages.

5. No extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for me!
I passed both of them on my own. Going down the ureter was the worst part for me.

*shudder*

Right now, I'm still walking around with that low-level pain, occasionally spiking. My shift at the IRS begins in an hour; I'll probably take some ibuprofen with a ton of water and see how the evening goes.

I've never heard about later stones bringing less pain with them. Pretty interesting.

(thanks to all!)

8. I have chronic problems
And they do indeed get less painful over the years. Probably your ureters get stretched a bit. But you might have a REALLY small one moving. It doesn't take much to irritate.

Beer and lemonade are very good too. And if you can get it, distilled water.

I dunno what kind you have (there are many different kinds) but I had huge, hard ones that had to be broken up with an unending series of lithotripsies. They only use that if the stones are too big to move themselves.

Hope you get rid of them. But if you can find it, have one analyzed to find out what is happening. With most people, it's calcium and cutting dairy out of your diet will help. With others it's salt and minerals, with others it's oxilates.

9. I got it again a few months ago and the pain started out in a different...

area. The pain was not nearly as bad as the first time. I was able to make it to the ER in a timely manner.

This is the weird part, I managed to 'trap' the stone and it was bigger than the first one. The first one was so small I never even saw it. I gave the specimen to the hospital for analysis. So, the stone was bigger and the pain was less. Weird.

11. My first was kinda like that..
It was so small that I only spotted it in mid-flush.. too late.

The ibuprofen/aspirin combination seems to be working somewhat. I'm taking a wait-and-see approach; the emergency rooms in Austin will be crazy on Saturday night anyway..

12. I was pretty shocked when I saw it.
I put it in the plastic specimen jar and it made noise like a rock or pebble. That sucker really was a stone. Looking on the net, I saw various pics of other stones and I got ill. There were various shapes and one even looked like a radiolarian.:scared:

10. Might just be a urinary tract infection
You could go to the doc, pee in a cup, and they can tell if that is it. My back hurt pretty bad when I had a UTI.
