For me it was January 13, 2004!:hi: I had lurked for a few months prior.

1. Some time in 2002
I'm not sure when. I just remember joining and trying to build up my post count so that I could post freeper stuff during the 2004 campaign but unfortunately, I've gone native.

Is that really true or are you just pulling our leg?
I'd be interested to find out if this place really is managing to convert a few freepers.

Although I am probably one of the more conservative members. I fail a few liberal litmus tests.

22. I couldn't possibly describe it.
If you go to Old DU and poke around in the LBN and GD archives, you'll find the threads from that day and the days after. I wish I still had the link to Old DU, but for the 23rd time I appear to have misplaced it.

Figure out a way to check out those archives, and read it for yourself. Look especially closely at the Khephra threads.

46. Oddly enough...
that's about the same time I joined. Who knew? :)

I had lurked since day one but finally got peeved enough to join around May and then posted for the first time on a thread you started about the Tim McVeigh execution. I got into a little spat with Crewleader my very first day. I still can't believe that. :)

4. I started lurking just before the Iraq invasion
and became addicted to reading the stuff here. The place was so much smaller then, that you could actually hope to read most of the stuff that interested you.

I didn't join until Oct 2003 though. I was just too shy to take the plunge and start actually posting. I've gotten over that now though.:)

5. I think it was October, 2001
I was looking for something, anything, that would moderate the jingoism that was just starting to manifest itself. So I think it was October, although it could've been November.

I registered under the name DisgustipatedinCA, which I have since given up in favor of my given name.

Usually, if you want a different username, you have to set up a new account and start from scratch with your post count and date. They'll let you transfer your star, but nothing else.

32. What up BWQ?
Here is my story: I actually first joined DU back in July 19, 2003 under the name "writestuff13". I was living in Arizona at the time, but as a native Floridian, I wanted Bob Graham to win the nomination.
I ended up only posting 14 posts, before I dropped out of circulation because of personal issues in my life having to do with with my job and my live-in girlfriend at the time.
In August 2004, I decided to rid myself of the Arizona stress and move back to Miami to help out with the Kerry campaign. (Even though Graham didn't win the nomination, I was ready to do everything I can to get Kerry in office).
I arrived in Miami in September after a three week road trip and I volunteered for MoveOn and the Kerry people in Miami. I worked my ass off going door to door reminding people to vote.
On election day, when I was sure we were going to win, and all the exit polls were pointing in our direction, I witnessed the shrub steal another election.
I was convinced the election was stolen. I still am. But at the time, I need to hear what other dems were saying (it's not like the MSM was saying anything).
Anyway, I had forgotten my original password, and my original e-mail was an Arizona account that I no longer had, so I rejoined DU under a new username.
RagingInMiami described just how I felt after the electiion.

A friend sent me a link to that week's Top Ten Conservative Idiots list; I started lurking and checking out the site after reading the list and laughing my ass off. It was right before the Iraqi invasion, so the emotion was pretty high and there were so many interesting posts. I registered and the rest is "history", so to speak! I can't believe I have over 11,000 posts now. This is the first message board I ever really joined.

Until I found Alfranken web, then DU, I thought for years that I was alone in my outrage. What a joy to find a community! The first night I ever lurked at DU I read a thread of people who had found something and spent about 6 hours breaking thru computer stuff and finding info that they then e-mailed to the appropriate people. I didn't understand most of what they were saying, but damn, they were on fire, and exposing crap. First time I was ever up all night, and not understanding wtf was going on. But they did, and that's what mattered. I was not alone in my head anymore.

50. An embarrassing story.
I first stumbled across DU in 2002 when it popped up in a Google search. I looked at the front page, liked it, and bookmarked it. From then, I would visit once or twice a week and read the articles - Top 10 Conservative Idiots, that kind of thing.

It was only in very late 2003 - when I was thinking "I wonder what their staff is, I wonder how this is funded, it's great" that I noticed a link to the discussion forums. I had never seen it before.

When I clicked, I expected a near-empty room - I've seen "forums" before. I was amazed not only by the level of interaction and the number of participants, but also by how easy it was to use. I surfed for a couple of months and joined. I donated a couple of months after that.

End of story.
