Do you read your local paper?
Edited on Tue Oct-21-03 07:20 PM by YellowRubberDuckie
Here in Oklahoma, we have a state newspaper called The Oklahoman. They seriously need to change their name to the Oklahoma Republican. They seem to worship Shrub and his buddies. They praise his name. What happened to the days of Newspapers striving for the truth, instead of eating the shit the government feeds them politely with a knife and fork? They used to dig deeper, investigate, ask questions. Now all the do is see how far they can get up politicians' asses. It really pisses me off.
Which leads me to ask you guys if you read your local papers, and to wonder if yours are as bad as ours?

1. I do - the New York Times!
Thank God I moved out of my hmoetown and to a place that can claim the Times as it's "hometown" paper! Woo hoo!!

Though it's gone funny in the last few years, I still stand by the gray old lady.

7. Yeah, I read YOUR hometown paper too, Rabrrrrr!
I read it online every morning. I love it even when I disagree with it. Two of my fave columnists are Krugman and Herbert. I cannot believe that in these times they are still given space to voice their opinions.

My hometown paper, the St Louis Post Disgrace (oops Dispatch) SUCKS! It was once a respected paper and now it's little more than a small town rag.

2. Pittsburgh Post Gazette
Good old fashioned liberal paper. The few wacked out righties who get their letters run *really* stand out, which makes them look nuttier.

Dicky Mellon Scaife propaganda tabloid, the "Tribune-Review". Ugh, my stomach.

5. I go to the online site
I would not pay anything for this piece of crap called a newspaper in this town. Capitol of the state and it sucks, the paper was sold to a company in Georgia and it has gone from bad to worse.

14. The Topeka Crapitol Urinal?
Used to be a good paper to work for, at least the photo department was. Editorially to the right of Hitler and advertising dollars strictly from poverty, it still has claim to be the daily paper of Sin City on the Kaw.

Did you know Jeff in the photo department?
Yes, it is pitiful and it is 100x worse than when you were here. Did you know we had our mayor thrown out? Big times here in T Town.

6. The Des Moines Register was once a respected newspaper
Its always had a Republican slant but this was the newspaper that was the longtime home for liberal columnist Donald Kaul and some pretty decent investigative reporting. I recall that the Register used to say in their promotions that only the NY Times had more Pulitzers than it. Sadly no more since Gannet bought it.

8. Every Morning With the Los Angeles Times.
While the L.A. Times is not the warmfuzzy newspaper that it once was to me -- way back when the first thing I looked for was Conrad's brilliant cartoons and the last thing I read was Jack Smith's columns -- it still is my hometown paper and I miss it terribly when I'm away from California.

The Los Angeles Sunday Times is great where even this week Al Franken still held the #1 position in the Booklist with Bill O'Racist below him at #2. Sweet.

9. Don't have one here
Little village of about 500 people. There's a city nearby though, that publishes a rag that is so blatantly republican my blood pressure rises if I look at it for more than a minute. And they still have idiots writing in complaining about the "liberal media".

10. I read the funnies in the Delaware County Daily News,
and now and then some other parts of it -- Gil S, the columnist (neighbor, in the high-rent section of the boro) who thinks Atilla the Hun was a bleeding heart, wrote somewhat in support of John Street lately -- wonder of wonders!

Edited on Tue Oct-21-03 09:13 PM by northwest
It's pretty balanced. Don't let other liberals in the area tell you otherwise. A lot of folks like me think it's too right-wing, but I've been reading it for months now, both online and print. It's pretty much 50-50 left/right. It's locally independently owned, too.:D

18. The sad truth is, there are no good local dailies anymore
Edited on Tue Oct-21-03 09:19 PM by WannaJumpMyScooter
With the exception of about 10-12.
NY Newsday, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Seattle P-I, Hartford Courrant, Baltimore Sun (occasionally), San Jose Mercury-News, Virginia Pilot-Ledger, Denver Post, Manchester Union-Leader (every 4 years or so), Philadelphia Inquirer
and then the rest...

the past greats, like Chicago Sun-Times, NY Daily News, NY Post, KC Star, Dallas Morning News, Newark Star-Ledger, the list is long and sad

the nationals...
NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post (which is also a good local paper), Wall St. Journal, Christian Science Monitor and the always revolting USA Toaddy.

Sad times, indeed

on edit... if I missed your paper, I mean no disrespect, this list is just off the top of my head... kind of like my hair.

21. San Diego Union-Tribune. A Copley owned repug rag.
Bush and Reagan worshipping, Ah-Nold loving, Clinton bashing, anti-labor, racist fishwrap.
I stopped reading it three years ago.

We have an alternative weekly, but unfortunatley, it is mostly entertainment news. It is more liberal-leaning, though.

I don't read the locals (there are two and they both suck) but this one is awsome. It may not be local but it is free. Check it out.
