Elton John's Publicist Says Singer to Wed

Monday, April 25, 2005

(04-25) 10:54 PDT LONDON, United Kingdom (AP) --

Pop singer Elton John will marry his longtime partner David Furnish later this year or early next year, his publicist said Monday.

Britain's The Mirror tabloid newspaper reported Monday that John, 58, would marry his Canadian partner Furnish, 42, before Christmas.

Laws recognizing homosexual civil partnerships come into effect in Britain in December.

John's spokesman Gary Furrow told British Broadcasting Corp. the nuptials may be postponed until 2006.

1. They must read DU
I bet all these pix floating around lately have inspired them to tie the knot.

2. I'm so happy for them!
I remember an interview with Elton a few years ago and he said he wished he could marry David. One of the main reasons he gave was that he wanted to protect David financially in case something happened to him (Elton). Hey RW lurkers ... do you get it? There's no "homosexual agenda" involved; it's just a man looking to protect the future of the person he loves.

Congratulations Elton and David! :toast:

4. I almost groaned before I clicked
I was afraid it was one of those sick Jacko or Liza type marriages. Instead it's nice to read of a true love couple getting married.

I wish them well. If only gay people over here could do the same.

5. Congrats Elton and David
I know a few homosexual couples and I see them so deeply committed, so much in love. It hurts me knowing that, if one of them dies, the other will not be protected the same way that my husband and I are.

It repulses me that in this day of the 21st century, with technology that was unthinkable even just 20 years ago, with all the higher notions of democracy and power of the people we are so fond of reading in books, that most of the people still rely on an extremely edited and mistranslated version of stories narrated orally in ancient times authored by illiterate nomads and shepherds in the Middle East to justify why my friends cannot share in their devotion and love with all the rights and privileges that come with a marriage.

This is one issue that I feel very strongly about, although I am a heterosexual married female. Even my hubby, who is an old-style repub, feels the same way about this issue.
