After all, it is sponsored by a church...The N.E Conference of the United Methodist Church...and all...maybe he will make a video available to each congregation observing the day!
A Call to Observe Health Care Justice Sabbath Sunday - May 22
"Health care is a basic human rights and a responsibility for all," states our Social Principles. The 1996 General Conference adopted a resolution calling for all UM congregations to observe Health Care Sabbath Sunday on an annual basis. 2004 New England Annual Conference adopted a resolution "The Conference for Health Care For All," which also calls the congregations to observe this special Sunday as a way to bring awareness to the suffering of the uninsured and the underinsured and to commit our lives, both individual and congregational, toward the work for health care for all. Health Care Justice Task Force is calling all congregations to observe this Sunday as we have promised to do so in last year's conference.
Observing Health Care Sabbath would be a good option for this year's Peace with Justice Sunday, which is May 22. There are number of churches planning to observe this Sunday in this spring. We have worship resources as well as other ideas to make this Sunday fun and meaningful. The attached page has some tips from General Board of Church and Society in planning the service. Holding an Health Fare after Sunday service is another option where medical volunteers would do basic check ups especially for those who do not have health care insurance among the congregation and the community and some advocacy works such as letter writing can be done. We also have a 7-minute video about health care justice that can be shown during the service or other event. We can help you plan this service either in this spring or anytime this year.
There are 45 million Americans who do not have any kind of health care safety net and some of them must be worshipping in your congregation. Observing Health Care Sabbath Sunday would be a blessed beginning of Christ's ministry of loving our neighbors who live without health care insurance as ourselves in your congregation. ....
It goes on to give contact information about planning for this day...But then again...Health care and Peace...probably not Senator Doctor Frist's kind of issues, huh?
