It's poor people like you that make me mad
The continuing saga of the shady dentist. Got a bill from the dentist who told me I had four cavities and told Mr B he needed $5000 worth of work done. Went and got a second opinion (since I haven't had a cavity since I was 14 and Mr.B is not toothless)and, alas, no cavities and Mr B needs $1000 of work done.

So, called the dentist, told him my cavities healed and would like to negotiate the bill or I could go to the dental board. In his words, it's poor people like me that are his problem. He told me I'm one of those people who go to lawyers and raise his insurance. I told him he was scamming us for a boat payment and I've never consulted a lawyer in my life, never had a reason.

Basically, the man is a scamming a-hole and my personal mission in life is to see that this never happens to another of his patients.

1. That is awful
How can he get away with telling you that you have cavities when you don't?

I think you should turn him in to the dental board. And get copies of the xrays he took.

I mean why didn't you report him straight away? Would you really consider letting him in your mouth after running that scam past you?

9. I had a dentist try to pad his bill with me too.
I went in to have a broken tooth repaired last summer. While there, I scheduled a cleaning and exam, and got lucky enough to get in the next day. They took x-rays and told me I had severe periodontal disease, several cavities, two teeth about to abcess, cracked fillings, and that I had at least two crowns that needed to be replaced (and I had no crowns older than five or six years!). Estimate for all the work needed? Seven grand.

I never went to them again. I have a new dental practice now. I did indeed have a molar with cracked, old fillings, and the entire tooth wound up cracked. But this practice told me that on first inspection, my crowns look fine and that I may have the beginning stages of gum disease (which can be stopped in its tracks), but nothing to the level the other practice told me. I'm aware that I have cavities between two teeth that are next to each other very tightly, and I need at least one root canal, possibly two. But the work I need is not nearly as extensive as the first practice claimed.

Anyway...if he's lying to you about cavities, he needs to be reported to the board.

13. Dentures?!
Wow! If he needed dentures, wouldn't he have noticed some serious mouth trouble before now? That's scary.

17. please, please be careful about those root canals.
see my post below, they caused ringin in my ears which has been going on for almost a decade. I could lose my hearing. If I could change only one thing in my life, it would be that I would NEVER have had the root canals. I won't have another one, either.

There is plenty of info and books out on this subject, like "It's All In Your Head" and most recently "Tooth Truth" about the effectes of dental compounds on health and the immune system.

Please tell your husband to be very careful and if he goes ahead make damn sure they do not use mercury amalgam within the root canal. But If it were a back tooth, I'd just have it pulled if I were him. His immune system will thank him.

28. I have been going to a Dental School for the past few years....
Cant beat the price, and I always have a student and a Dentist looking after me. I recently had a root canal and a ceramic crown put on for 300.00 and a few hours of my time. They dont price gouge or pad the bill.

14. I would immediately report
him to the state dental board, with all of the documentation you have, along with a verification from your second dentist that the first one is full of shit.

Most dentists are ethical, decent people who really do try to do the best for their patients without scamming them or fucking them over. It's the ones like this that need to be stopped ASAP so they don't paint all their colleagues with the same brush.

If it was me, I'd tell the SOB I wasn't going to a lawyer, but if he talked to me like that again, HE would be the one that would need dental work and lots of it. I despise condascending pricks like that. :grr:

16. ALL the major problems I have in my mouth were caused by DENTISTS.
tmj, narrow pallet? check, from badly done braces

ringing in my ears, dead teeth leaching mercury into my body from unnecessary root canals? check, because I beleived them when they told me I needed root canals.

receding gums caused by highly acid saliva caused by years of metal silver mercury fillings changing the ph of my saliva? check, ad nauseum

in my humble opinion, the best thing for one's teeth is to stay the hell away from dentists.

perhaps have the back teeth sealed in childhood and then NEVER darken their doors again. If I had followed this advice my whole life probably would have turned out differently. I had symptoms of mercury toxicity when I was a child...I vomited convulsively, as well as having uncontrollable diarrhea, swollen glands, low immune system, chronic depresssion, kept getting tested for mono (negative 8 or 9 times) treated with antibiotics which led to a systemic yeast imbalance and symptoms akin to attention deficit disorder.

I HATE DENTISTS.

But I've said it all before...

I've had mine all removed to something that is actually about the same color as my teeth. I've had 3 cavaties filled in my back molars and yet you can't tell if you look at my mouth because of my new fillings

scamming dentist

Not really he does some pro-bono work (too much according to his wife/accountant) and does some barter work (one person cleaned my mother's house once a week for a month while mom was recovering from surgery-several thousands of work btw)
