3. A few words I really, really loathe . . .
Skank. Slut. Whore. And I hear them all the time from liberals who purport to support a woman's right to do whatever she wants with her body.

End of mini-rant.

I think you're out of line on that. Supporting rights is one thing. Accepting irresponsible behavior is another. I'll fight for your right to do whatever you want, but I don't have to like it, sort of like flag burning.

20. Ya know, I don't really have one.
The "n----r" word DOES make me very uncomfortable, but that's more the context behind it that bothers me. But in general, I usually feel like they're only words and it's only the context that means something.

And yeah, I think it is Voltaire, but I'm not certain at all. Part of me wants to say it was an early American, like Tom Paine.

How am I thinking of people's use of the words "skank," "slut" and "whore" in the wrong context? I'm not flaming you. I want to understand how using those words to describe female sexual behavior is the right thing to do in any context.

(Edited for left out word)

27. It's just that you're making an incorrect correlation
People might use the words "skank", "slut", or "whore" (or others, no doubt) to voice their contempt for perceived irresponsibility. And that's fine. But that does not necessarily mean the person who uses those words advocates that a person's sexual rights should be taken away, nor does it denigrate their position on the issue.

I used the issue of flag burning as an example. I find flag burning morally reprehensible, as I do any maltreatment of the flag for political statements. However, I will fight to the death for the right of a person to make that statement if they so please. Just because I don't agree with the statement, it is their natural, inalienable right to free speech to do whatever they wish so long as it does not infringe on the rights of another human being.

It's separating the your approval or disapproval of an action from protecting their right to perform said action. The two are not mutually exclusive. I hope that clears things up.

28. I'm sorry, I wasn't really trying to flame you really...
I just think it's important to separate the defense of one's rights from moral approval of actions. The right wing cannot do that, and as such, they attack free speech and abortion rights (amongst others) constantly. I'm not saying you're a right winger in any way, of course, I'm just illuminating why I think it was important to comment. My apologies if you took offense.

33. It's OK, Vash.
I'm about as far from right-winger as a person can get. It's just that I know many, many women who've been branded with words like "skank," "slut" and "whore" for enjoying their sexuality in ways that affected no one but themselves and their partners.

Here's an example: I'm a 42-year-old woman in a mongamous marriage, but I know for a fact that if I weren't married to the man I sleep with, there are plenty of folks in the red state where I grew up who'd whisper that I'm a skank, slut or whore.

There are lots of behaviors that I object to but wouldn't want to see made illegal, because I don't think it's the government's job to legislate morality. Morality cops belong in churches (if anywhere at all), not public policy jobs, in my opinion.

44. It seems these days like "whore"
is moving out of the straight-out sex trade kinda-thing and into a more general meaning--that being somebody who denases themselves in ANY way necessary to make that cash.

The late great website mediawhores online serving as the best example. Media or political whoredom is far more degrading an endeavour than merely providing sexual outlet for a fee. At least in my mind at any rate.

However, I most certainly grant you the point on its primary meaning--and the other two words....well, again you'll get zero argument from me.

46. I wouldn't disagree with you there.
I know exactly what you mean. I was a mainstream journalist for 20 years and managed to find more honest ways of supporting myself rather than trading my ethics for corporate approval. There's a dumbing down that takes place among journalists over a period of time, probably too lengthy to explain here, and I was fortunate to have been able to escape that for the most part.

Totally off-topic, but I live in a country where prostitution is legal and regulated in many states. I see no difference between making a living with one's mind and making a living with one's body, when certain protections are in place. (But I know that my view on this issue is unpopular among many feminists.)

47. interesting about it's indo-european roots

Word History: Derivatives of Indo-European roots have often acquired starkly contrasting meanings. A prime example is the case of the root *k-, “to like, desire.” From it was derived a stem *kro-, from which came the prehistoric Common Germanic word *hraz with the underlying meaning “one who desires” and the effective meaning “adulterer.” The feminine of this, *hrn-, became hre in Old English, the ancestor of Modern English whore. In another branch of the Indo-European family, the same stem *kro- produced the Latin word crus, “dear.” This word has several derivatives borrowed into English, including caress, cherish, and charity, in Christian doctrine the highest form of love and the greatest of the theological virtues. ·Another derivative of the root *k- in Indo-European was *kmo-, a descendant of which is the Sanskrit word for “love,” kma, appearing in the name of the most famous treatise on love and lovemaking, the Kamasutra.

56. its interesting it hasnt always been so derogatory
Cunt is believed to derive from a Germanic root *kunton "female genitalia", which also gave rise to Old Norse kunta (ancestor of Norwegian and Swedish dialectical kunta and Danish dialectical kunte), Old Frisian, Middle Low German and Middle Dutch kunte, and the English doublet quaint. And, by the way, the word wasn't always considered derogatory, even though it is today. Be careful about assuming that a word's modern connotations must have governed its formation. By the way, no connection has been made between the Germanic words and Latin cunnus. The proto-Germanic root of cunt is ku- "hollow place", while the Indo-European root of Latin cunnus is (s)keu- "to cover, to conceal", the etymological meaning of cunnus being "sheath".
