300-pound bronze statue of elusive dog that roamed mine yards to overlook Berkeley Pit

Butte sculptor Don Watts and two friends muscled the first full-sized bronze Auditor statue onto a window ledge in the Venus Rising coffee shop recently.
The likeness of the stout and independent dog that roamed the barren mine yards and kept miners company until its death in 2003 is twice its actual size and weighs around 300 pounds.
"It was all the three of us wanted to pack," said Watts, a Montana Resources employee who volunteered to sculpt the memorial statue for the Auditor Foundation.
Watts finished the clay version used to make the bronze last November. He then drove it to Northwest Art Casting in Bozeman. There, it was recast in bronze by sections that were later welded together.
