Honestly! It's bad!

Trust me. I have my reasons. It's doing some kind of serious damage, I tell you. I'm sure of it! I'll prove it. But wait... first I have to think of something silly to bitch about, hang on... let me think for a second... um, yeah! There it is!

Cheap snacks! Cheap, nasty snacks are bad and I can't believe you eat that crap, really!

Your liking cheap snacks is deteriorating the quality of food products... it's manufactured garbage! Cuisine is an art, you cheap bastards!

3. Pre-fab pop music puts real musicians out of work.
Reality TV puts talented writers out of work, too.

Defend that one, please.

4. How?
Studios have NEVER given 'real musicians' a break. Television studios have very rarely backed quality over garbage.

They ALWAYS go with the thing they think will be a guaranteed sell. This has always been the case, so I don't know why all the shirt rending now.

7. Until Survivor hit big, studios hire writers to come up with
FICTIONAL stories.

Until ProTools, skilled musicians were required to produce music.

It's cheaper for corporations to use machines for music and let the "actors" on reality TV shows come up with their own stories. It's just like in other corporations; when maximaizing profit, the first group to go is always labor. They fire a bunch of "overpaid" writers (read: paid at all) and do away with sets, 40% of the crew, and then push the hype machine into overdrive, thus ensuring other corporations will follow suit in the interest of "staying competitive."

My wife is a screenwriter and I am a musician. I know of what I speak.

And just because a bad situation has been bad for a long, long time does not make it suddenly un-bad.

8. That is true, but before animation, more actors had work.
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 02:03 PM by redqueen
Is animation therefore bad?

I don't even consider it bad, really. I like the Supremes.

I consider this a good example of how one is punished for being a snob.

9. The Supremes?
Oh, you mean the vocal group who used actual musicians on their backing tracks? I like them too.

Animation doesn't dominate the entertainment industry like pre-fab pop and hip hop and reality TV does.

MAybe with "Desperate Housewives" being such a big hit, maybe more writers will start being hired for TV shows. Maybe.

11. Yeah, actual musicians, like they use on American Idol.
You seem to want to discuss ProTools. I know real musicians who use it too... so I still don't get the outrage there, either.

Animation doesn't dominate... yet.

15. Musicians have no choice but to use it.
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 11:49 PM by RandomKoolzip
There are some, like Frank Black or the White Stripes who are bold enough to record their music live to two-track tape or with outdated equipment, who are, by the grace of some kind god, allowed to make a semi-mainstream, self-concious art without corporate interference. However, the danger there is that the art of hearing a band play together, in the same room, as each musician shapes the song-material according to their respective mental, emotional, and physical idiosynchrasies, i.e. the heart of the rock process, becomes museum-ized, placed under glass for perusal; removed as it then is, its physical presence becomes merely a "burp" in the continuum, a eulogy rather than a celebration. In other words, a mere handful of such priveleged acts are doomed to become "paragons of integrity," ie. "other"ed, rather than another choice in the pop marketplace, like rock used to be.

What ProTools has done to the recording process is the same thing CGI has done to the moviemaking process: make a representational art a shellac'ed burlesque of itself. A good action or Sci-Fi director with a relatively limitless imagination can acheive great things without the use of CGI if that particular director has a feel for moviemaking in the traditional, classic sense. Think of what Geroge Lucas acheived with the original Star Wars movie; the man had a budget, adjusted for inflation, that was a mere fraction of the cost of an average action flick in 2005!

However, CGI cannot duplicate feel, nor can ProTools.

Out of economic necessity ("Staying competitive") musicians must now use ProTools and other such softwear to remain relevant.

And they may use actual musicians in the backing bands in AMerican Idol, but they somehow have made them sound exactly like Karaoke machines. I guess you could argue that this is an acheivement in itself, but I wouldn't dare be so arch.

14. And while we're on cheap snacks
They are good for you! Chock full of vitamin S (sugar).

There is a widely published study showing that depriving children of cheap snacks can KILL.

"Twenty Seven subjects were deprived of yummy snack foods for 27 days (by merely removing all access to food) and they DIED!"
