5. But if no one else notices, does it matter?
That statement always smacks of "If a tree fell down in a forest, does it make a sound?" or whatever the question is. :silly:

Plus, it's an easy way to say everyone's beautiful, which is causing me a lot of angst since I learned not everyone is special.

Are they?

I don't know anything anymore! :scared:

8. here's my point - someone could be physically attractive
...but ugly on the inside. And ultimately, that ugliness trumps whatever physical beauty they may be perceived to have.

But beauty is in actions and kindness. Generosity. Compassion. A sympathetic ear.

I don't think that this is a tree falling in a forest at all.

11. I don't beleive in an idea of "true" beauty
I just think each kind of beauty must be valued independently. Would I find Mariah Carey physically beautiful? Yes. Would all signs point to her having a beautiful personality? No.

There is also intelectual beauty, and then there are some women who posess all three (Jeanene Garafalo.)

And of course there are those who posess none.

20. You could say your favorite kind of beauty...
I have a friend from college who only is interested in physical beauty. That might be strange to us, but he's completely at ease with it.

He got married to a barbie-doll type wife, and despite the fact the two have nothing in common except the pursuit of physical perfection, strangely enough they don't fight a lot. They have a kid now, and the two are now in their mid thirties. They both spend about 3 hours in the gym per day, and eat stragically. You and I would look at them and not see the point, but they're happy with it.

Strangely, neither is really that much of an a**hole, theyre just both incredibly vain. Strange folks.

57. That reminds me of that scene from Annie Hall where he is trying
to figure out what keeps people together, and he stops a couple on the street to ask them what brought them together:

Alvy: You look like a very happy couple...How do you account for it?

Young Woman: I'm very shallow and empty and I have no ideas and nothing interesting to say.

Boyfriend: And I'm exactly the same way.

56. I guess it's all relative - I think Mariah Carey is a dog.
I do notice as I get older, It's not so easy to separate physical beauty from inner beauty - I know a lot of people who are "technically" gorgeous, but the more you get to know them the less appealing they become.

Then there are people that probably wouldn't turn your head on the street, but the more you get to know them the more attractive they become.

23. I think that's a good point.
A lot of people can have that inner beauty but go on with their lives being unnoticed by those around them. Many are too busy within their own worlds to see someone who is truly beautiful inside but doesn't project it for others to see.

29. Yes. I've met beautiful women and men who are so self-absorbed and
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 04:43 PM by Kathy in Cambridge
self-centered that they're ugly. I went out with the president of a frat when I was in college who was pretty much the best-looking guy on campus. He couldn't carry on a conversation without it coming back to him. Example:

Me: "It's a beautiful day."

Him: "I wonder what XYZ sorority will do if I walk into their house in my jogging shorts"

It got really boring after a while, and the sex was less than exciting because it was all about him. He was the classic narcissist. he surrounded himself with buddies who were little more than 'yes' men, who basked in his superiority and uniqueness, which he was always telling everyone about. If you criticized him, a shitstorm would erupt. He had no self-reflection whatsoever.

I was sweet and kind-hearted, but I knew I was being played. Since then, I've been able to spot narcissistic personality disorder, and the manipulative tendencies that accompany it. And I run as quickly as I can in the other direction.

I did a lot of dating in college. :-) Frat guys were easy! :o

just kidding...

I have run into more men than women with narcissistic personality disorder. I think I was a magnet for them when I was younger, but grew out of it. I have only met three women who were narcissists, and it's sad, scary, and disconcerting. The only way these people ever get a clue is through intervention, but that also feeds their persecution complex ("I'm so unique and wonderful that everyone is jealous/plotting against me/judging me").

38. General clueness is a hallmark of the disorder.
I've known a few of these too, men and women. They are so enamored of their own wonderfulness that they have absolutely no insight into their faults. Unlike normal people, who learn and grow, they remain stagnated at some lower level of development. The problem is never them. It is always others, who are, as you said, jealous, judgemental, and out to get them. There's not much you can do about it either, other than to give them a wide berth.

42. You're right-it's always someone else's fault
I was thinking of this woman I knew on the punk rock scene many years ago. She was the classic narcissist. Even though she had a boyfriend-who was basically an enabler-she would try to seduce other men right in front of him. She drank and did a lot of drugs too, so it was like watching a train wreck. There was no talking to her, and people began avoiding her like the plague. She died of a drug overdose last year at 39.

"someone could be physically attractive...but ugly on the inside. And ultimately, that ugliness trumps whatever physical beauty they may be perceived to have."

I, for one, have never been attracted to people purely based on physical appearances. Nice, sure, but many other things are more important to me, and without them, I don't find the person attractive.

40. That is obvious.
The most beautiful moment in my life was trying to get through that second day of labor 4 years ago just so I could hold my baby in my arms. I was 230 pounds, sweaty, and miserable. The greatest moments of my life, the ones involving true love and true strength of character have nothing to do with anything external. Those people I have loved, I have love for their strength of character, their minds, their beings. External stuff is only icing on the cake. There are things that matter far more. However, good icing does not mean necessarily mean bad cake either. Some people take care of all facets of themselves- body, mind, and spirit and there is nothing wrong with that either.

my father said of her in their life together that she'd only grown more lovely to him over time, that every line in her once flawless face had become like a dear, much beloved friend.

Emerson said, "As we age, beauty steals inward."

That was the moment I fully understood the truth of Emerson's words. My parents, at their advanced age, were luminously beautiful people.

63. Yes
that is why I see the beauty in so many people here while reading black text on a white background.

I'm just thankful tonight - happier than I've been in a long time because of a job situation.

65. I agree, progmom.
If you aren't a good person, who cares about others and is good to people etc., then you really aren't beautiful, no matter how you look. That old cliche, the Golden Rule, really applies here, I think.

78. Thank you so much, progmom....
now I'm embarrassed! I try to be good, and if you ever get to meet me in person, you'll see why I say "try." I can be abrasive and short tempered and even rude in person; I tend to talk without thinking first and this can be awful...In print, I have time to consider what to say and how to say it...

But still, I appreciate your remarks more than I can eloquently express...

You're a beautiful person too, you know, inside and outside!
