I wonder if I should EVER buy a car...
I was considering purchasing a car when i go home to MI for the summer. Something like a Corolla with good mileage. But I don't really need one, I'll be working at camp and only get the weekends off. In the fall, it's back to Alaska. I thought it would be nice to have one for when I visit home.

But after that I was thinking of moving somewhere with a good transport system, maybe a small town where all I need is a bicycle or a city with a good train/subway system.

So, I wonder. Maybe I should never buy a car again. I have a bicycle. I wonder if I really will ever need one to own.

1. Corolla's a good choice
But it all depends on where you live and where you expect to travel.

And if there's any way to convert your car to an alternative fuel, it might be worth considering.

2. Guess it depends on what
town or city you're coming to in MI. If you went to Ann Arbor for instance, everything you need is pretty much in walking distance of the university. You could always rent a car on the weekends or if you wanted to drive someplace to visit family.
I wouldn't own a car if I didn't absolutely have to have one.

As it is I drive about 40 miles one way to work. Car definately a necessity then.

4. If you do buy one, get one with a diesel engine.
Then you can convert over to biodiesel with ease.

6. Try to do without one if you can.
Then if the time comes where you really think you need one, look into getting a good used car (oops, I mean "previously owned").

9. Well, I mean used
I've already done a lot of research on the kind of car I want and all that. I've settled on Corolla as it meets my comfort qualifications as well as getting stellar gas mileage and meeting my budgetary needs. Though, I am rapidly becoming a fan of the Civic hybrid.

Also on my list is the Jetta TDI. But the main thing is, I wonder how long I can go without a car being a necessity in my life.
