I have done this 3 times now. Maybe its just not for me. I guess my "bitch" is that in all cases they weren't that "nice" and I feel if they get my hard workin' self for free they should at least treat me nicely.

2. Yes
Once I volunteered to collect the money for the soccer coach and a woman wrote me a bad check and I was out the money I paid into the gift and $20 for a bad check. (Why should the person who gets the bad check have to pay? It's like pouring acid into a cut)

And I keep volunteering to send out those charitable mailings. ANd my neighbors, though reasonably financially well off, don't donate and it's embarrasing. I'm NOT doing that again. Really.

3. I learned in the Army to never volunteer.
To bad I didn't learn that prior to signing up.

4. I worked for Habitat For Humanity
and stuck it out for about 4 months, regretting every minute of it from the start. My regular work was experiencing a slow-down at the time and I could afford to go help build houses about three mornings a week.

But when the site foreman on meeting me told me he hoped I wasn't a "Librul", I knew it was a mistake. Everyone there was extremely, extremely conservative and I got into arguments every day. I ended up saying things and having things said to me that couldn't be taken back. So I quit. I didn't realize it when I signed up but Habitat For Humanity is a "nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization" and except for one person I met there who shared my views, everyone else was ultra hostile to me every time I opened my mouth.
