Best cover version of a great original song..
I think I'd have to vote for either Orgy's cover of New Order's "Blue Monday" or Fear Factory's cover of Gary Numan's "Cars". Both of these songs are classics, but the covers make them a bit edgier.

1. ARRGGGHHH!
I don't want to hear anything about cover recordings! The topic of my last Copyright Law memo was "should section 115 of the Copyright Act be repealed in its entirety? Why or why not?" That's the section covering compulsory licenses for making and distributing phonorecordings (i.e., covers). ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

4. Hurt
Nine Inch Nails did it great, but Johnny Cash's cover gives it an emotional depth not found in the original.

11. Double Trouble's version of Led Zep's "Rock & Roll."
Stevie Ray Vaughan's bassist and drummer with a host of guest musicians. On the Zep track, it's:

Susan Tedeschi: vocals
Kenny Wayne Shepherd: guitar solo
Van Wilks: guitar
Charlie Sexton: guitar, mando guitar
Tommy Shannon: bass
Chris Layton: drums, piano

Hey, I'm a purist too, but Susan Tedeschi kicks royal ASS on this one, and deserves credit for it.

14. Allman Brothers cover of 'Statesboro Blues'
not quite as good as Taj Mahal/Ry Cooder's original but commendable: BTW, rarely have I seen Taj credited with the arrangement - which is a pity.

Tut-tut
