Fellow atheists - what do youthink of this?:
(This post is not knocking anyone, whatever they believe - or don't!)

Interesting thoughts in today's Guardian:

"Not believing in God is no excuse for being virulently anti-religious or naively pro-science"

1. I do not believe
I am anti-religious or naive. Believing in religion putting your trust in the tooth fairy. Religions thrive because they have meetings where a group of people want to be told what to believe in. Atheists do not have meetings and want proof in the form of empirical measurable data. Sometimes Science makes a mistake but over time and with more data an answer is eventually found. Then there are more questions. Religious people do not want to accept data that contradicts their belief system. Whether its the Earth going around the sun, the age of the earth or evolution.

2. My being an atheist isn't an excuse for being anti-religious and
pro-science, it's an effect. This supposed atheist has it completely backwards.

The very fact that these so called works of art are viewed by believers as having some basis in fact is cause enough for the the non-believer to cry foul. T

3. Having met Prof Dawkins I can only say this article is libelous
First off most atheists are not rabidly antireligious. In fact they quite naturally defend a person's right to believe whatever they will. It is only when a religious view or doctrine is forced on them that they speak up. Then they take up arms against such oppression and fight back. Their counter attack may unfortunately be broad but that is the nature of not being able to distinguish between various stripes of belief.

The author of this article seems as blind to the nature of science as he proclaims Prof Dawkins to be towards religion. In is book Unweaving the Rainbow Dawkins speaks passionately about the wonders of nature and the desire to understand things without destroying their inherent beauty. Science is not the sole means to live one's life by. It is merely an effective means to understand some aspects of the life around us.

As to relying on science I suggest someone try going a month without the benefits of science and compare to going a month without the benefits of religion.

14. Now, to lock Az into a contract.
I'll get the anime - maybe I can lull him into a sense of stupor with shinies before he reads the fine print...

9. A disappointment from the Guardian.
Atheism isn't an orthodoxy. All atheists share for certain is a lack of belief in gods.

Period.

This guy assumes all atheists think the same. That's just as bigoted as an atheist saying all believers think the same. It's simply untrue.

I couldn't even finish it, the piece was so rife with broad-brushing. What a waste of space.
