Poll question: Be honest: Do you consider yourself a controversial member of DU?
I don't--and it's partly by design and partly by accident. I don't post flamebait threads, and I don't usually disagree with the status quo--but that's only because I agree with it anyway, so that's really by accident.

What about you?

IIRC, you were the reason they invented the 'name removed' action.

Those were the days, eh? One could do or say just about anything back then. Except freep.

Good to see you and the other elite DUers hanging on, Pitt. Of course, since I am not an elite, this post will prob be ignored. Suits me fine. <G>

47. Hi, BeFree,
You probably don't remember me...I made one of my first posts in Feb. of this year, and you responded! I was angry at how Bulgegate was handled. You made some very welcoming comments and I was so happy at becoming part of DU! Thank you for that welcome! I'm nearly always here in the Lounge these days...it suits me much better than anywhere else on DU...

Good to see you!

80. Hi, Peggy
I do kind of remember.... every time I see your name a spark occurs, now I know why, thanks for the reminder.

So, are you on track to becoming a DU elite, or what? I would guess not, if you're holed up in the Lounge, but then again, maybe you will be the Queen here, one day? LOL

Don't forget us little folks on your way up the ladder, eh?

84. Good morning, BeFree!
ME? ELITE? Nevah! And you will always be a giant in my eyes, for your lovely post to me last Feb! And the same goes for being Queen...lolol
I love it here, and I really enjoy talking to people of all stripes and orientations...I don't think I'll ever be an elitist...

I'm glad you sort of remember...I wish I had the link to our conversation, but I don't. I did print it off and I still have it. And I put you on my Buddy list, too.

You take care now, hear? And play over here more often...This is such a cool place, the Lounge. As yvr girl says, "Silly is a Lounge requirement." I love being silly...The world outside is harsh enough; sometimes we need silly.

"The worst thread ever"
I think the NRA-GOA are the brownshirts of the neocon deathcult. They are the living embodiment of the theory that all political power comes from the barrel of a gun. I see any liberals who kowtow to the NRA as usefuls idiots for the reichwing. Zell Miller has given me a sour attitude toward Dems who whore for the NRA and that includes Howard (I was endorsed 8 times by the NRA) Dean.

24. I do not consider myself to be controversial, normally.
And I think that those who read my posts/threads don't see me that way either. I'm having a lot of fun here. Once in a while, I like to speak up on issues where I consider my viewpoints valid. But I'm not here to make a flame war or anything like that. I want to shed some light on issues, not make things heat up.

But I've learned in the last few weeks to avoid certain things. I'm a little controversial because I'm a progressive catholic. I've decided to stop even going there outside of the catholic group. I'm going to just have fun in the Lounge, and stay out of anything having to do with religion. You live, you Learn.

28. Now and then.
I'm a practicing Catholic, which has lead to a number of heated arguments over the church and the role that faith should play in our personal beliefs. Overall I'm a pretty progressive person, but I'd bet that some of my stances have landed me on a few ignore lists. I don't believe that you have to rabidly agree with every facet of liberalism to be considered a liberal, and I've never been afraid to voice a dissenting opinion if I honestly felt it warranted (I don't argue to argue, but I'll argue if I think I'm right). I'm pretty sure that I landed on another one yesterday during the debate over that girl with leukemia that refused treatment because of her religion.

I really don't know whether most people here have an opinion of me one way or another though. I've been here for years, but I haven't exactly been a prolific poster. Still, some of those threads were memorable :)

29. probably
I rarely start threads, and I'm not interested in "flamebait," but I do take some positions that are are extremely unpopular, most notably my stand on feral cats. (If you must know and don't already, yes, I believe they should be de-populated, sorry.) I don't take any position to be a mean nasty insensitive person or to make Democrats look bad but because I honestly believe it's the greatest good for the greatest number.

I try to do it courteously, and if I am rude or tactless, I try to be responsive to complaints. But nonetheless I suspect I am considered at least somewhat on the side of weirdness.

I do not believe in keeping certain topics silent. Sometimes they are not easy to talk about. But this does not mean they should remain silent.

Contravercial topics can be discussed IF those involved want to remain civil and they want to improve knowledge on the matter. Silence is death. Giving voice even to difficult subjects is critical. It may ruffle a few feathers, but that is what the lounge is for. Putting the feathers back in place.

Now I'm not sure.

I think some people get thier kicks misinterpreting posts to stir the shit, and I don't really go out of my way to avoid them because it dignifies that sort of behavior, so I have more than my fair share of run-ins with those posters. There are a few people I have legitimate disagreements with on issues we feel strongly about, but that rarely causes the sort of massive flame fest more peripheral issues do for some reason.

I'll take the vegan pancakes with maple syrup and whipped earth balance, please and hash browns and orange juice too if you've got 'em.

57. Nah
Other than defending Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods and America (the group) here in the Lounge I don't think I really take any particularly controversial stands. For one thing I don't like confrontation and for another, though many of my views might cause controversy with the majority of Americans they are in the mainstream here on DU. There are perhaps a couple of issues (generally non-major, not particularly important issues) that I tend to disagree with the majority of DUers on, but I usually present my views diplomatically enough that I don't really piss anyone off.

That is, as far as I know I don't really piss anyone off... For all I know hundreds of you have me on "ignore" and you can't even read this post! (Yeah, I'm kinda paranoid, too. :-))

60. no
I rarely type fast enough to be able to hold on to any anger I might have long enough to post a snarky reply before I am able to cool down, and make my replies more palatable for general consumption.

Dem2theMax, another DUer gave it to me. I don't know where she got it.
(Dem has a photobucket account, and dumped it in there; I just link to it and voila)

63. If I Were Able To Post More, Hell Yes
I have a serious arm/hand injury that makes it hard for me to type a lot or for a long time, but occasionally I piss a few people off. If I had full use of my hands, more people would be coming for me with torches and pitchforks (probably).

64. Yes and no.
I am one of those people who bares it all and it can sometimes be controversial. Yet, at the same time, I am one of the people who swear up and down that DU has enriched my quality of life. I live in a red state where people think like it was still the early 1950's. Having the wonderful people of DU to talk to helps alleviate a lot of pent up stress and in some cases aggression. I haven't popped a mental cap too incredibly bad and I attribute that to DU. Some may find that controversial, but I'd be willing some would agree with that notion.

110. I agree with you
I pretty much bare it all, too. Some people like it, some people hate it, and some people are really helpful (even if they don't realize it).

DU really helps. I live in Texas and as a gay pagan man I'm not exactly adored. So when I get trashed I can come here and talk to people and just have fun, let off some steam, and more often than not, learn something from them.

In fact you are one of those people - you responded to one of my posts and I've been thinking a lot about what you said. It made me think about myself, read stuff I haven't read in years, and ask people questions I never thought I'd ask. I guess you could call that "controversial", but I'd rather think of it as "valuable".

Khash.

Personally, until now I thought I was just average on the scale of "low-key to neutrally- regarded poster," but in this one week I've been called hostile, reactionary, a liberal freeper and someone who needed to "lighten up." Someone even posted that I was going to get banned "soon," to which I say, whatever.

85. Good morning, my dear Redstone,
You are certainly NOT controversial, at least not in my book. But you are a lovely guy and I always enjoy reading what you have to say. I also liked very much the photo of your house that you posted the other day. The house and the photo looked wonderful!

And I have NO IDEA why you would say you're universally disliked! Nothing could be further from the truth, IMHO! At least here in the Lounge, everyone I've seen talking to you likes you a whole lot; and that includes ME! For what it's worth...

It's time you got your eyes opened as to your worth, which is considerable!
