I wondered why anyone would watch it. It really wasn't my cup of tea.

Then one night, my son fell asleep on my lap while I was watching something else on the Food Network. Iron Chef came on afterward, and I couldn't reach the remote. It seemed too much effort to move my son to reach the remote.

Trapped by my own laziness (or inertia), I watched the entire episode.

Those bastards sucked me right in.

Personally, I don't watch TV much. I play video games though. Pretty much EVERYONE looks down on that. I still don't care. I know who I am and what they are and that's all I need.

I'm actually glad people like mediocre / bad art / artists. Gives more people with an artistic bent who maybe aren't so talented an escape from the rat race, and I'm ALL for that!

Like i said (here or somewhere else, I can't remember), it's not like any of us are solving world peace in our spare time.

I don't watch "American Idol" but don't really feel "better" than anyone because of it. There are some things I don't do that, admittedly, make me feel superior to some who do them, and I'm sure there are plenty of things I do that the DU elite would look down on me for, though. That's alright, though; I am who I am I guess.

Liberal elitists aren't nearly as annoying as conservative elitists (there are still a lot of those in rich areas, especially in the red states, I figure) but both groups can be grating.

I feel elite over parents who beat their kids... but this dumbass bullshit... it's annoying from liberals, conservatives, all races, all religions. It all pisses me right the hell off.

I have a pet peeve about various types of genre fiction. Personally, I think there are good and bad examples of every sort of fiction. But some sorts of fiction are considered acceptable, even cool. It's 'cool' to like Science Fiction.

Oddly, the best-selling form of genre novel is romantic fiction. And yet, I can't find a more than a handfull of people who admit that they read it. In fact, when asked, most folks say "Oh jeeze, that stuff is crap." When I ask which authors they've read, they assure me they've never read it. So...I'm wondering how it is they know it's crap if they've never read it.

It's only when that attitude starts turning into feelings of superiority that I think a problem starts.

I don't only not watch it, I also think that it embodies the death of art in popular music. No Jimi Hendrix or The Beatles or Janis will ever get discovered on American Idol. Not even a Kurt Kobain. Only those who can conform the best will. Only the next singing android. I'm a musician myself so this is a topic close to my heart.

As I said in the post above, I don't take it against anybody who does -- I do a lot of other mindless things that are also likely close to the hearts of people who care about some other issues.

Not that I really think it's wonderful that people think they're elite for anything that isn't deadly serious. See my post about war, child abuse, etc. Yeah, I think I'm better than people who cheer wars of aggression, who beat their children, etc... but this started over frickin American Idol ferchrissakes.
