9. Ah yes, Cinco de Mayo
A holiday created by American beer companies so they can get a head start on summer sales.

11. Actually it was created by the Mexicans.
They are amongst those who have defeated the French in battle. :D

14. Yes, you're right there
But it was hyped up by the American beer companies during the early 1980s as a way to tap into the Mexican-American community.

In Mexico, it is not nearly as popular as it has become in this country. It might be recognized in some regions, especially near where the Battle of Puebla took place, but in most regions, it's just another day.

Now if you talk about Sept. 16th, Mexico's independence day, that's a totally different story.

15. True. I was being a smart-ass.
But since this comes up every year, I decided to pass along the real story.

It's all Corona's fault (the Gambrinus Importing Co. of San Antonio). :-)

17. I'm glad you did
Most people assume it's Mexican Independence Day.

18. I never understood why Diez y Seis wasn't a bigger deal.
It's relatively big here in Texas, but that's the real day that should be celebrated. I guess it's too close to Labor Day for the beer comapnies.

19. Cinco de Mayo was perfect for them
It is not too hot, not too cold, a perfect way to kick off the summer. Plus, imagine the gringos trying to say "Diez y seiz de septiembre" while downing their fourth cuervo.

Cinco de mayo has a nice ring to it and it's gringo friendly.
