I think I have two senile dogs

what do I do? They loved to have balls thrown their way, well, no more. They just sit there.

1. Do nothing,I have one also. I did check out some websites

on this problem(it is called cognitive "something") and there is medication which I wouldn't bother with.

If they don't want to play,they don't want to play.

Mine is also deaf and getting cataracts so I just pet her more often and let her age in dignity.

they run to it and than just sit there. I throw a ball, they run to it, they get to the ball and sit there.

But......... let me wake up at 3:00am-- they are like spitfires. "Wow", time to get up and run around". They are ready to go. They have my number for sure. I love them and enjoy their twerks.

they are still my babies, and they know it.

I wake up in the morning, one dog is sleeping under my arm pits, the other is sleeping at my feet. They are so protective. I love them.

4. There is a good drug that helps with that problem.

I'm not sure of the spelling. The drug is selegiline. Our dog weighs 8 lbs so we give her very small doses. It seems to have helped with her symptoms of senility.

7. It is tough to watch our friends get old...

My dog is 11 years old now. He has always been very active (he is a Border Collie). The past couple of months, he has been limping and having a hard time getting up from laying down.

We had him checked out a few weeks ago and the vet said it wasn't his hip, it was his back that was arthritic. Our pooch goes for his first acupuncture appointment on Saturday.

Keep us posted on how you are doing with your dogs.

8. for my 12 year old dog kodi, glucosamine, MSM and Rimadyl daily

it has made a world of difference over these past two years. kodi is better than she was 24 nonths ago before i put her on this regime. she had the same difficulty rising on her right hind leg and can now get up easier and hardly limps.

10. glucosamine/chondronitin with MSM(anti-inflammitant) has a synergy.

the glucosamine/chondronitin (i use Syn-Flex, a liquid form of G/C)for maintaining the synovial(sp) fluids for the joints and the MSM shows anti-inflammatory properties of the joints. the two togther seem to work better than each alone.

the rimadyl is also an anti-inflammatant and boy does it work. some dogs contract liver problems with it, but if your dog is very old, you make the choice.

funny, i turned on my vet to the Syn-flex for her own arthritis
