Things I'll miss (and won't miss) about Pittsburgh
I posted this the other day, but find I must make an addition.

Things I'll miss:
1. My school chums Virginia, Melanie, Doug and Kelley
2. All the trees, hills and flowers
3. Snow (when I can stay home)
4. Law school
5. Living amongst a Democratic majority
6. Relatively pleasant summer temperatures
7. The friendly people
8. Bob Evans (but Texas has Owens)
9. Eat 'n Park waffles
10. No sales tax on clothing

Things I won't miss:
1. Having to drive WAAAAAAAYYYYY out to the airport
2. The wretched street signs (or lack thereof)
3. City taxes (do they have these in Texas??)
4. The Steelers (once a Niners fan, always a Niners fan)
5. Freezing my derriere off in winters
6. Potholes
7. Snow (when I have to get out)
8. Terrible traffic patterns and having to go out of my way to get
somewhere because of the bridges, etc.
9. Pierogies (although I never tried one)
10. Having Santorum and Specter as my senators (but out of the frying
pan...)
11. The scumbag next door who insists on BLASTING his music 24 hours a day

2. Not until the 28th
From Pitt Law. They always have graduation on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend; we're the lucky beneficiaries of a LATE graduation this year. But I'm heading off to Texas the week after next!

3. How can you NOT miss pierogies?
Especially if you've never tried them? I don't think you assimilated very well to the region. No siree, not at all.

Enjoy Texas! :hi:

7. We moved here from Kansas in 2000
And the only friends I really made are my law school compadres. We never really made close friends here like we had in Kansas. Now I'm off to Texas, where we have some built-in friends (my husband's medical school classmates from Pakistan and people who have moved to Dallas from Wichita), so things will be much better.

16. I agree - Pierogies rock!
The potato kind are a carb lover's dream: potatoes inside of a dumpling. YUM!!
If you can find the homemade kind (like you can in Pittsburgh), then consider yourself lucky. :bounce:

5. I have to go there for a wedding...ewwwwwwww....
Love the wedding folks, dislike the idea of Pittsburgh.

Though, I'm being stupid because I've never been there.

6. It's a gorgeous city
I had the stereotypical thing about it being dirty and smelly, but it's cleaned up and is beautiful. Lots of hills, trees and flowers (right now).

9. I'm a bit of a city snob...
I only like Manhattan. :silly:

But seriously, I'm sure Pittsburgh is okay-but you made my 'eww' feeling return when you mentioned driving soooo far out to get to the airport.

I haven't decided whether I'm flying or driving, and the whole trip seems like it'll be a pain in the ass to make (and pay for!).

Sigh. At least there will be flowers and hills!

8. It's a great city...
...imho.
It is clean, people are friendly, it's inexpensive, tons of excellent restaurants and bars/taverns. Plenty of great old European style architecture in the churches and city buildings. Great record and cd stores, I could go on and on. I hope you enjoy yourself.

12. Inexpensive! Whoo hoo!
Thanks for the wishes, I actually know very little about Pittsburgh (for some reason I think of automobiles and Detroit when I think about it). When I'm there I'll try to get to some of the sights....

15. For eating and drinking...
...it's really hard to beat.

Here's a recommendation or two:
If you have a bit of spare time, try to make it down to Carson Street. There are great bars and restaurants there and a nice section of town (pretty funky and boho, but not snooty) to walk in.
Try to stop by "Jacks" bar for a real slice of life.... The Piper's Pub is also a great place. Carson St. is along the river, you can ride the inclines to the top of the mountain and look at the city at night with a majestic view that will really surprise you.

Or, you could visit the "Strip District" which is not what you might fear it is. It's a section of town with farmer's markets, open air food and vendors, great Italian delis and shops (the entire city is practically one big Little Italy, other than the equally wonderful Squirrel Hill section), and of course, more bars and taverns.

If you are a music fan, check out Eide's or Paul's CDs on Liberty Ave. Right up the street from Paul's, is the "official" Little Italy district.

Hope you have a great time!

17. Thank you!
I appreciate it--I think most of my group of friends that are going have no idea what it's like there.

I'll pass on this thread--thanks!

10. Amazing...
there are some that still get the impression that Pittsburgh is a filthy, sooty industrial city. Yes, it once was, but now it's beautiful.

13. Well, yeah...
See above, LOL, I only have eyes for Manhattan, but...

I do think of it as an industrial city (which doesn't prevent it from being interesting). And I'm not even sure why that is, which is interesting--the way you can form an image of something without good reasons.

11. Don't let prejudice get in your way
If you need a virtual tour guide, send me a PM along with the general area of the wedding, your interests, age etc and wifee and I can give you a a pretty good list.

Pittsburgh can be a fun city if you know where to go and what to do. It can be a disaster if you don't.

14. Thank you!
I'm not sure yet of the particulars (it's not till August), and I would appreciate having a thing or two to do other than the wedding.

When I have a better idea of where it'll be, I'll be giving you a virtual ring. :)
