1. I did that whole Leary thing

when I was in my early twenties. I didn't really live the hippie lifestyle but I did a little dropping and smoking. I guess I had a good time, but I watched some people get seriously messed up. I know two people who are lucky to be alive, but I guess they staryed from the Leary type stuff and became hardcore junkies.

to drugs. It was the 70s. They were too young. Not the best of the Boomer era.

3. My girlfriend in college's roomate

reportedly slept with him. He was in town for a tour, she was the student assigned to pick him up at the airport, etc. She didn't come home that night, I know that. I idolized Leary at the time.

in order to accomodate Leary and a group of sycophants. She told him that she thought he was just a silly, self-promoting huckster.
The month before this, she baited Abbie Hoffman with a question about Palestinian liberation (she actually liked and admired Hoffman)
I told her that all she had left to do was spit in Bob Dylan's hair, and she would win the "pissing on hippie icons" trifecta.

7. I knew Tim.

He was a hell of a nice guy and claimed to be a fan of my fiction. I used to have a tape from my answering machine with a couple of messages from him but have no idea where it is now.

First met him at Dragon Con in Atlanta where he was a GOH and I was the media liaison. I expected a burned out old man and what I found out was he was a sharp as a tack liberal who still lived to party.

He and I spent the next morning nursing hangovers and talking politics and literature.

I still miss him.
