Shopping at the Salvation Army store.
(Thanks to Shell Beau for the inspiration for this post.)

It's finally official.
My daughter is all grown up.

She's now a mommy and buys her jeans at the Salvation Army store.
"They're cheap, they look good, there's plenty of wear left in 'em, and they're all broken in."

I remember when she was a teen-ager and the jeans had to be whatever designer label happened to be "in" at the moment. I think Jordache was one.

I had conversations with Miz t. that went something like
"JEE-ZUSS CHRIST! Wranglers are just fine. Why are we laying out this kind of money for jeans with some fancy-schmancy logo on the butt?"
"Now, honey...we cut corners on other things, but she's getting to be a young lady and, right now, this is very important to her. You can give a little on this."
"<mutter mutter grumble grouse>"

She buys toys there too. For about 10 cents on the dollar.
When Jack gets tired of one, she donates it back.
The SA her "rent-a-toy" store.
I can't tell you how proud I am of her right now.

1. The jeans are cheaper.
And I always hope that someone tried to wear them long after they were too small for them. That way, I can buy a size smaller and pretend that I lost some weight (love it when they stretch out the jeans).

7. The only tax scam left for us little guys.
YOU get to put the value on the receipt.
By the time the IRS would want to check out your donation, it's GONE!

You're right. If it wasn't for the mortgage We'd be taking the standard deduction. Not fair.

23. Not even then if you don't have enough other stuff
to come up to the minimum for itemization. We passed that point several years ago. It hurts.

6. My daughter discovered thrift stores
Edited on Thu May-05-05 03:24 PM by ihaveaquestion
when I put her on a yearly clothing budget. After a couple of years of her continually telling me she "needed" this or that article of clothing, I allotted her $350 a year to buy clothes. She was about 15. Some things were excluded, athletic equipment and underwear, but basically she got to "spend" her $350 on anything she wanted for the year. If she blew the whole thing on a leather jacket, that was her problem. This worked like a charm! All of a sudden, thrift stores were good places to shop and vintage clothing became chic!

My stepdaughter who also would spend money like water is also a mommy. Now she is a bargain hound. I can hardly recognize her anymore! LOL.

13. Thrift Stores Rule. Period.
I can't remember when I bought new clothes (other than underwear, of course); just about everything I own has come from a thrift store, and I've gotten more than a few steals there..

16. I Won't Shop At The Salvation Army Stores....
...because of the Salvation Army's policies regarding gays.

But I have no problem patronizing a Goodwill or ARC thrift store.

18. I knew it would only be a matter of time.
And believe me, I'm not castigating you.
I am also not a fan of their policies.
Hell, I'm a athiest.
But for us, they're the only game in this small town.
And I think they do some good, even if I don't agree with their politics. I'd rather buy from them than Walmart.
