2. How did Labour do so well?
I actually found myself rooting for the Tories, just because it was obvious the Lib Dems weren't going to do much. Surely, even the damnable Tories would be better than Labour at this point?

Believe me, they're not. They're unashamedly racist, xenophobic and monetarist. The Conservatives are the blood-brothers of the GOP. They stand far class war, greed, fear and hate. The Tories would be happy to follow Bush* for any number of wars he'd like to start. Blair doesn't have that luxury any more.

Tony Blair is an asshole, but the Labour Party is good. You have to understand that people vote for their local MP and they don't directly-elect the PM. In Britain people tend to vote for the party rather than the personality of the leader.

Also, Labour's domestic policy is social democratic and far to the left of both the U.S. Green Party and U.S. Democratic Party. A Tory victory would have been a disaster.

What the election meant was that Labour's Parliamentary majority of 160 was reduced to 66 (which is healthier for democracy) and that most of the Blairite hawk Neoliberals lost their seats. This means that the power in the Labour Party has swung back to the social democratic wing.

I think he'll be gone within 12 months, at least (if he doesn't step-down, he'll be pushed).

The optimist in me thinks he'll be history in 6 months.
