Martin Barre of Jethro Tull is the one to me. His solo on Aqualung alone makes him one of the greats.

9. Bingo!
His solos are the only reason I pay attention to modern concert renditions of that chestnut.

In general, his playing has gotten crisper, and laden with feedback that peels one's skin. He's awesome.

Guitarist and founding member of Camel thirty-odd years ago (and playing better than ever).

There's a 'jukebox' where you can hear songs. Listen to "Ice" a monumental guitar-centric instrumental.

All hail the colossal behemoth of greatness that is Camel.

On edit: it just occurred to me (because it came up on shuffle-play) that I should mention Eddie Hazel, who played guitar on Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain". I was going to post a link to the song on amazon, but their sample is only the intro - it cuts off right before the guitar starts rocking. Seriously, if you haven't heard it, get it somewhere. A deeply emotional solo that goes on and on.

16. John Lennon
Thought of as a song-writer more than a guitarist.

Listen to his soloing on Get Back (its Lennon not Harrison) and try playing Dear Prudence. I dare you.

20. I've been trying to think, but I can't answer this.
It seems like all the great guitarists I know are the ones always mentioned among the best. I guess I don't know too many obscure ones. The only one I can mention is Alex Lifeson of Rush; but I'm always mentioning Rush in every rock music thread.

26. Tom Petty I'll agree with
Edited on Fri May-06-05 02:11 PM by EC
but I think Keith gets his due, he's not underrated

my choice Kyle Cook with Matchbox Twenty, he's stuck in a pop band and is much better than that...

On Edit: now that I looked at the tread it seems most of the ones mentioned are getting their due.
