2. This is the problem with "zero tolerance" rules

I've never liked them, for just this reason. Each case should be considered on its merits - blanket policies are lazy and almost always end up penalizing someone who should not be penalized.

3. Situational ethics: I learned about them in parochial school

In the 8th grade, we had a young guy come and speak before our class and answer our questions. During the hour or so that he spoke, he chain-smoked cigarettes and put them out on the floor. Under normal circumstances, such behavior would have been considered shocking by the nuns. Even the local parish priest was not allowed to smoke in the school building. But this 1968 and the young man was a marine just back from Vietnam. The rules of our cozy, safe little world didn't apply.
