5. You need a DVD burner
which I think you can get for a couple hundred bucks now, and DVDs can hold around 4.7 GB.

I use DVDs to archive video files.

27. Internal stuff is always cheaper than external...
You can get a double layer burner for under $100 now, it may not even be possible to get single layer burners anymore, but they'd be cheaper.

Single layer media is pretty cheap, you can easily pick it up for around 0.25 per disc on sale. The double layer media is still pretty expesive though.

What are you using for compression before the backup?

12. I'm not sure, but do they sell two sided writable Cd's?
That's the only idea I can think of to get more info on a standard disk.

18. Hell, DVD burners are down to about $50 now,...

The quality ones go for about $100.00.

Just go to pricewatch.com.

Also, FYI, a regular CD holds 650mb, but you can get 700mb cd's. They're quite common.

DVD's a little more complicated. A quick google search came up with this:

http://www.disctronics.co.uk/technology/dvdintro/dvd_formats.htm

It seems to jibe with what I know.

If you get the 17gb discs, make sure you get a burner that's compatible with them.

Now that I see you've got 7 gigs. You could get that on one of the dual layer DVD's or double sided DVD's - or two of the regular DVD's.

Also, if you have an mp3 player or Ipod, you can back them up on there if you have enough capacity on it.

(on edit)

after reading the rest of the thread, the external hard drive is also a good idea. Check for a price on pricewatch.
