I'm so damn proud of myself (garage sales rock)
This morning I got up and did my Saturday morning garage sale bit. It rained hard early, but started clearing off about 8:30-9. I guess many of the folks who would have been out early, didn't come out because of the rain.

So, today I found:

*Dresser with mirror
*Bike with training wheels
*All the summer clothes my son will need (probably 30+ outfits)
*Almost all the clothes my youngest daughter will need (15+ outfits)
*About six outfits for my oldest daughter
*Lots of shorts and t-shirts for my husband
*A brand new pair of sandals for the oldest daughter
*A brand new set of fingernail polishes & manicure stuff for the oldest daughter

The best part? I spent $27.75 ($15 of that on the dresser!)

It was a great garage sale day in Eastern Iowa. Did anyone else get out?

1. You forgot to account for

the cost of the house add-on you'll eventually need if you continue this sort of behavior

:-)

3. Lucky you!!
I miss yard sales like that. No way I could have gotten that for less than $100, and would have felt lucky to have gotten it for that price too. I haven't seen a dresser for less than $50 at a yard sale since I moved here. ANY kind of dresser. :(

6. Where do you live?
I never want to move there. ;)

My friend who lives out on the west coast says that she can never find good garage sales. I think, maybe, this is one thing that the south and midwest have over the rest of the nation.

10. Oregon coast
It's downright shocking. The first couple of years we lived here, my husband would get so mad at me; I'd turn to people and say "you know, I just bought this new for $xx". Now... HE does it!! Usually there's one decent sale a day out of the whole bunch. Sometimes when the gated communities have yard sale day, it can be pretty good too. It is interesting to see a $5,000 chair sitting out in a driveway, marked at $2,000! Uhm, if I could pay $2,000 for a chair, I probably wouldn't be at yard sale! And we do get alot of estate sales, which is cool. Not cool for the people who die I guess. But yeah, I'd say the midwest and south have definitely got the yard sale market all wrapped up.

12. I cashed in BIG TIME a few weeks ago.
I spent 135.00 but got an ungodly haul! (Three purchases were big ones, and I felt I had to grab them otherwise i'd have spent 50.00, on about 35 items) Sacramento and the Bay area rock for garage sales, IMO. Plus, there's craigslist's 'free' section; the best and worst thing that every happened to me, I am addicted! SF bay has the most active Craigslist around...woo-hoo!

Saturday morning garage sales are tons more fun than shopping at conventional stores.

Coffee table
2 pairs of shoes
Really nice blue hemp shirt
Digaredoo
hand-crafted Kokopeli box filled with incense.
1965 record player in awesome shape.
A dozen matching bowls and plates.
7 bars of handmade soap.

13. Get out
I couldn't buy the handmade soap for $23.50, let alone the rest of it. How much was the didgi? Couldn't buy that for $23.50 either.

I've had 2 great yard sale buys here. 3 Susie Cooper plates, 10 cents each. And a complete Hull Apple Cooke & Stovetop set for $12. I did get my coffee table at a yard sale and refinished it, but it was $40 for a 1960's beat up maple coffee table. And that's a good deal around here.

15. I admit: I lucked out.
The couple I bought those items from were moving and they wanted to get rid of EVERYTHING.

Most of the items were from a young couple that seemed to tired to haggle. (I showed up at 1pm and they were done for the day.) I chose what I wanted and they said can I have it all for $20. That's how I got the didge, soap and record player.

The 3.50 was everything else. (.10 a plate, .50 for the shirt, ect ect.)

Asheville is one of the best places to go garage sale hunting in America.

9. We're getting ready to have a Yard sale.....
Working from the top down...we're going through every room, trimming down, alotting stuff to the basement. Then it will be a good weekend+ in the crawl space hauling crap out and organizing.
Then on June 18th it's the yard sale.
We should do pretty well, some decent electronics, office chairs and other stuff we've needed then upgraded and never disposed of.
One person's junk is another's gold as it were!

14. I had to go home early today
we couldn't see out the back hatch of the wagon, we had it packed so full of crap.

I got:
three couch covers
some maternity and nursing clothes for when I get knocked up again
a baby sling I plan to donate someplace
a couple of books
a shield booster car seat I brought home and destroyed (it was expired, recalled, broken and the cover had mold on it) (I din't pay for this, they were glad to be rid of it)
a pair of jeans for me
a kelty kids hiking carrier

total cost: $7.00, plus a half gallon or so of gas and some root beer from a&w

Then I came home and worked on repainting the medicine cabinet and etagere I bought last weekend. :)
