As I said in my remarks as keynote speaker at the recent Save The World awards banquet, just before accepting the "He's Our Savior" Award for curing world hunger, you'll seldom meet a more humble perfect person than me.

That's not bourgeois is it?

3. Going out to Chili's on Friday night, and then to an Eddie Murphy
Edited on Sat May-07-05 08:11 PM by BullGooseLoony
movie. Credit card debt. 401(k)'s. Buying an SUV. "Not having the time" because you're "taking the kids to soccer practice." Old Navy. Watching Fox News and voting Republican. Cell phones. Buying anything you see advertised on TV. Reality shows. Gaining lots of weight. Trying to lose weight.

On edit: Wal-mart.

oooo ooo! TRACT HOUSING. Forgot that one. Commuting.

8. You know, I started to type "going to Chili's on a Friday night."
Isn't that wild?

Good thing we do IHOP on Fridays.

Let's see--we've just gotten rid of our credit card debt, and have no plans on going back to that shit. We do have 401Ks. We don't have an SUV. No soccer practice here, it's violin lessons. No Old Navy for us. No Fux news and CERTAINLY no voting like a hateful asshole. No buying what we see advertised on TV, we barely watch TV as it is. No reality shows (except I will cop to having seen Supernanny). No gaining lots of weight, though being vegetarian for the last month has caused me to lose a few pounds. No Satan's Five and Dime for us (Wal-Mart).

Cell phones, yes.

20. lol - yes!
i met a guy a few years ago. we had a lot in common and had a lot of fun. but i noticed he did all his shopping and dining at chains. i was shocked! he seemed so unique, but this made me realize he was very ordinary. i go WAY OUT of my way to NOT shop or eat at chains, so needless to say, this relationship did not last very long. it was a small difference between us but a huge message about what the rest of this person was going to be like - dull as shit.

22. Unfortunately, a lot of areas have nothing BUT chain stores
and such.

Where I live, I'm hard-pressed to even find a restaurant or store that ISN'T part of a big chain. The ones I do know about, I patronize, but they are precious few.

That doesn't make me dull as shit (I know you weren't saying that about me, just making a point), just a person who lives somewhere with very few other options, sadly.

I wish chain stores would go away or scale back or something. The mom and pop places don't have a prayer around here. They go under in the wink of an eye.

55. same here
All the chains, Chili's, TGiFridys, Outback, Olive Garden, Applebees, Benigans, etc. Not that there is anything wrong exactly with those places; they are just all the same everywhere. I thought variety was the spice of life. So I got to Snoopy's for good fish and chips or La Playa for fish tacos. Of course we have a gazillion (I believe that is the techinical term) mom and pop Mexican food places. They all have basically the smae menu (and some actually are chains in that there is more than one of them but it isn't quite the same).

I am so sick of every town and city being identical. All the suburbs with their box stores and strip malls. All new houses are identical too these days.

59. You're right
I should have qualified it with "when you don't have to."

My sister lives in a town east of Los Angeles that used be mostly desert but is now fully built up with a corporate chain commercial sector. Of course, in her case, all she has to do is drive west a few towns over to find something not corporate. But many people in smaller towns do have that problem.

34. Dang! In Austin? There are SO many great restaurants there!
How'd you end up at a Cheesecake Factory?

I spent about a month in Austin while "finding myself" after college. I never did find myself (in fact, I lost quite a few neurons on Sixth Street).

And winding up back in New England after all my roaming around has NOT improved my odds of finding a good Tex-Mex restaurant. What they call "spicy" up here would barely register on the tastebuds of anyone who's sampled the real thing! :)

36. To explain:
I was at a professional conference and the hotel where I was staying (and where the conference was) was in this retail area and The Cheesecake Factory was within walking distance.

We had already eaten everywhere else nearby and it was the last day. We had no car that day, so we had to settle for something we could walk to.

Fortunately I have a lot of friends in Austin and they ALWAYS take me to the great restaurants there. The Cheesecake Factory is the only time I've eaten at a chain place in Austin.
