Any tulip gardeners?
IWe recently moved to a house that surprised us this spring with blooming tulips. I never had tulips before and don't know much about NC gardening, at all.

Now that they are no longer blooming, how do I maintain them and, when I redesign the gardens, what's the best way to move them?

1. Tulips look nice
for what seems like a week only. I plant Roses.

2. Check with gardeners in your neighborhood...
Garden clubs, etc.

Tulips will NOT naturalize here in Houston. Bulbs must be refrigerated after purchase to mimic the right climate. After planting, they will bloom once--but never again. Recent winters have been so warm that the pre-chilled bulbs do poorly.

3. Dig them up after the leaves die back
Separate the bulbs and put them in paper bags and store in a dry place. In the fall you can replant them.

I'm sure more experienced gardners than I can add more to this discussion.

4. blm
lovebug has good advice.

i'd add: be sure to cut off dying flowers below bloom; the seed pods are useless & will rob nutrients that cd be stored in bulbs for next year. also, bonemeal (calcium) is a necessary nutrient for flowering; add after blooms die but while foliage is intact.

5. Don;t cut the leaves until they die back. You don;t have to dig them up
every year. Only if you want to move them or if they're getting crowded. You can fertilize them with any flower fertilizer.
