***UPDATE*** Child Accident/Surgery: May 10
Hello all,

Thank you for all of your messages of support and well wishes.

Some mixed news, but definitely with a silver lining.

The surgery yesterday had complications. This morning he is scheduled to have new surgery because there is still too much spinal fluid pressure in his head.

The good news is that there are no signs of paralysis or brain damage. So far, anyway. I find that AMAZING. The mother spoke to the co-worker she stays in touch with, and the mother sounded very optimistic, saying the child could be home by the end of the week. I am glad to hear that the mother seems to feel more at ease.

He is not out of the woods yet. Today's surgery is critical, but the good news offsets that to a degree.

 Give yourselves some credit, folks!

3. Thank you for that update!
I hope that it continues to look good for this child as the week progresses. It's amazing that there would be no signs of paralysis or brain damage after such a fall! Yet, at least. Hopefully the prognosis will continue to be good and today's surgery will only improve those chances ....

7. god, I missed the previous two threads on this...
...as a father, reading this kind of stuff is nearly unbearable (my youngest had a trip to the emergency room after cracking his head on the park cement a couple months ago, and thank God that turned out okay...)

Glad to hear the little guy is doing better, as is the mom...

Keep keepin' us posted...

The fact that the mother feels better has reassured everyone. I don't think we're free of worry, but any glimmer of good news is better than none!

12. The ray of hope in all this is
that little kids are amazingly resilient, and because their brains are not yet fully developed, they can sometimes compensate (form new neural connections) for brain damage that would leave an adult disabled.

Here's hoping and praying. O8)

16. I'm so glad things are going well and pray they will continue to do so.

When I read this, "The good news is that there are no signs of paralysis or brain damage," I knew I had to tell you my dad's story.

When he was ten, he had a severe head injury and was in a coma for two weeks, with his parents told it was 50/50 odds on his living or dying. Pretty amazing that he lived, being as it was 1927 and medicine wasn't what it is today.

He always claimed that the doctors told his parents that if he lived, he'd either be paralyzed or brain damaged to the extent of being an idiot. (Remember that the mentally retarded were classified as idiots, imbeciles, and morons back then.)

At this point in telling the story, Dad would shake his arms and legs to demonstrate and say "I'm not paralyzed!"

Here's hoping this little guy is able to live a long life, telling a similar story!

23. Thanks, not uncommon to have to do a couple surgeries
There can be massive swelling inside the skull after a traumatic injury and, since the skull is solid (even in kids) surgery is necessary to release the pressure. You don't want squished brains, so make a flap or hole to let the swelling bulge out of, and/or remove excess fluid. It sounds gross and is quite amazing, but is common.

Thanks ZombyWoof for keeping us up on what's happening. With all the crap in the world, it is nice to hear of something good happening to 1 person.

One of the beauties of children is that they tend to recover from serious medical issues much better than adults--hope this is the case here.
