Some Definitions to Aid Our New DUers

From Webster's Dictionary:

1) Fact: a piece of information presented as having objective reality
Example: in fact : in truth

2) Opinion: a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter

a reintroduction to those definitions. But this was for one of our newbies!

Fact: Heavy Metal is noise

Opinion: Heavy Metal is music

another example
Fact: An apple is red

Opinion: An apple is orange

Are we clear now? I am well aware what the definitions are.

Unless you believe all sound is noise (which could be argued as a fact - and wouldn't that be a fun thread) then stating that heavy metal is noise and not music (which you have done repeatedly today) is stating an opinion.

define "noise", without being subjective about it.

NSMA says metal is noise because that's the point of it. I don't know what she means fully by noise. I would tend to agree, if she's saying what I think she's saying - I like heavy metal, and yes, it IS noise in the sense that it is noisY, emphasis on Y.

I am assuming, based on context, that when you say it's "noise" what you really mean is "it's non-melodic, non-musical crap."

And at that point, I disagree. It IS melodic, it IS musical, if we especailly if we define music as sound organized and spread out over time. Though i'd go even further and say it is simply sound over time, whether organzied or not. The sound of factories is music. Street sounds are music. As well as symphonies, and, much as I hate to say it, rap and hiphop and salsa are actually music. TO ME those forms of music are noise, but I cannot deny that they are music.

So define noise, and be willing to admit that you should say "TO ME, heavy metal SOUNDS like noise", or maybe even "is noise".

But you cannot say that it is noise, objectively, until you let us know what the hell you mean.

An enhancement created by the available technology.

Heavy Metal would suck without the benefit of the noise that is ADDED to the underlying MUSIC.

And I define it thus: noise = signal degredation. To wit, all that bitchin' distortion!

I said I found Jon Stewart unfunny and responded with funny comedians.
