The problem with the Atlantic population is that very few calves are being produced. :( As I recall, the Pacific population is recovering. :) The Atlantic gray whale was utterly extirpated. Now the gray whale only exists in the Pacific. What a shame.

I meant no disrespect. I love watching cetaceans. I've seen humpback whales, blue whales, gray whales, killer whales, Risso's dolphins, long-beaked common dolphins, northern right whale dolphins and Pacific white-sided dolphins in Monterey Bay. It saddens me greatly that Northern Atlantic right whales--the name was given because they were the "right" whales to hunt--are probably destined for extinction. It's very sad.

Distinguishing characteristics: lumps or "callosities" on the head which are home to whale lice, a very bowed mouthline, no dorsal fine, spatulate pectoral fins. Here's an artist's rendition:

doesn't the whale's endangered status also threaten the lice, and thus anything that feeds off of them?

I need to read up on these guys again...very endangered. I'm quite upset they may disappear altogether. Cetaceans rule.
