Question
I have a toothache and I can't see my dentist until tomorrow. I've tried extra strength tylenol, that ambesol stuff, and just plain cold water and ice to dull the pain but nothing works. Anyone know anything that might work?

5. If your problem is caused by a type of infection, this will help/solve it.
And a lot of tooth aches are. (My mom's a dental hygienist)

3. Bash your pinkie with a hammer.
Don't break it... just bruise it really well. That should distract you from the tooth pain.

:hi:

6. break out the alleve
naproxin sodium is good for pain caused by inflammation.

If you have the beginnings of an abscess (does it throb when you stand up or sit up?) you should probably start on antibiotics as soon as possible. Take two alleve now and then another one before bed tonight - it will definitely help.

17. sounds like you've got an abscess
you should let the dentist office know and see if they think you need to start on an antibiotic today - otherwise the alleve will help get you to where he can relieve the pressure.

23. it's a pocket of pus with nowhere to go
can be the result of your body trying to isolate infectious bacteria below the gumline or as a result of a rotten tooth or root. You keep producing more white blood cells and jamming them in there but unlike an open sore it has no place to go so it puts pressure on the surrounding tissue and nerves.

It's noticeable whenever you do something that changes your blood pressure (i.e., sitting, laying down, etc.) You may want to sleep sitting up tonight.

7. amoxicillin
i'm not normally one of those people who rush to antibiotics for anything- but i had the same situation, and my wife has a bottle of amoxie's in the frig- (she HAS to take them before going to the dentist because of a heart condition) i took one, and the tooth pain went away.

or else try some oil of clove- even smoking a clove cigatette can help. but if you know someone you can get some penecillin from- try that.

8. Rub some cocaine along the gumline...
But might want to check the local statutes first. I hear that cocaine is illegal in some parts.

9. Is it abcessed or swollen
Edited on Thu May-12-05 11:40 AM by notmypresident
If there is a lot of swelling on the gum, crazy as it sounds, put raisins next to the gum.

My wife did this a few months ago and the swelling went down pretty quick.

13. it seems to be swollen a little bit
that particular tooth feels 'bigger' than the rest almost as if the tooth itself is swollen. but i'm sure it's just the gum around it thats swollen.

12. Oil of clove
Just don't get it on you're gums or cheek if you can avoid it. This is what's in the red cross toothache drops.

I hope you get feeling better.

27. UGH! Talk about "if you can stand the taste!"
The dentist put a strip of gauze soaked in clove oil into a dry socket I had once. I was ready to kill myself to stop tasting it. I put a whole pack of grape bubble gum in my mouth and tried to pack it around the socket . . . . :scared:

Mutley, beware, you'd be making a choice between pain & a horrible taste. It works on the pain, Allegro's right, but . . . :scared:

31. I like clove-flavored confections and cloves in cooking. But this --
Imagine all the pain caused by lovers past, the trauma of your first pet's death, the horror of whatever gives you night terrors. Now distill that all into a taste that permeates your head -- you swear you can taste it in your ears -- and there is absolutely no escape. I'm not kidding when I say I wanted to kill myself to escape it.

Sorry. I know it seems a little over the top, but I swear on my mother's grave it was that bad.
