$56 MILLION Lottery winner "too busy" to pick up winnings (day job)
http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20050510005999&newsLang=en

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 2005--Lottery officials announced the winning ticket for last Saturday's $56 million SuperLOTTO Plus jackpot was sold at Broadway Food Corner in Los Angeles. "A young man telephoned our Santa Fe Springs District Office earlier today and said he held the winning ticket," said Acting Director Chon Gutierrez. "The gentleman told our district manager in Santa Fe Springs that he could not claim his ticket because he had to work a double shift and would try to come back sometime later this week," said Gutierrez. "Perhaps the fact that he just won $56 million has not fully sunk in."

Sang Lee owner of Broadway Food Corner, the lucky retailer who sold the winning ticket, said that one of her regular customers told her that he had the winning ticket but he was too busy working and didn't want to bother anyone at work today. "I know he works in the neighborhood but I don't know his name," said Sang Lee.

1. wow, that's one person with a work ethic
wouldn't i like to work with him! if i won that kind of money i would so quit my job on the spot, possibly without even calling and letting them know, depending on how much of a BIOTCH my boss had been acting at the time.

3. I once saw a cartoon.....
In which a guy is standing on a desk and peeing. The man sitting in the chair behind the desk is looking up at him and says, "I'm guessing you won the lottery".

8. "Hey when is _____ coming back from lunch?"
:bounce:

Okay maybe he works for a family business and he can't just drop everything or they would go under. With $56 Million I would think you could help them out.

Who knows?

9. depends on what his commitments are
maybe if he doesn't work, other people lose out, or would have to work more to make up for his absence.

Does anyone know what would happen if an undocumented immigrant won the lottery? would they give him a check on his way to the airport for deportation, or void the award due to criminal activity?

11. it's very possible he has a work ethic and is sticking to it
as others have mentioned as well. If that's true then I like this guy already.

10. Try this on for size
You win millions in the lottery. You go to work as usual. You take everything in nice and SLOW. Your ace in the hole is financial security! You don't have to work a grunt job again in your life. EVER! (as long as you don't piss away your money)

Maybe he loves his job, loves those he works with. He knows his life is changed forever once he cashes that ticket in.

My guess is he's savoring his last days/hours as a normal guy.

12. From a lawyer friend-Win the lottery, don't quit your job, change name
, change Soc. Security number (you can), don't agree to press conference/pictures, collect, leave job with viable reason.

All lottery winners have to be named publicly (on lottery website usually)and there are all kinds of people and schemes to seperate you from your money (for example-step in front of your car).

16. my biggest fear
Would be someone trying to sue with some kind of made up charge.

I'd ease out of the workplace just as you described.

17. actually, in Delaware
you can choose to be anonymous offically. Which is why, anytime I'm in Delaware, I buy a lottery ticket.

13. i've read that quitting isn't the smart thing to do
because it can take months to actually get any kind of money from a big lottery payout. people quit their jobs then have to juggle months of bills before the payout.

could be the winner in this case told them he had to work as an excuse to get ready, ie. calling accountants, etc.

15. Agreed, but a short-term loan shouldn't be hard to get.
Once the ticket is turned in, the lottery commission can verify that you're due the funds. Any bank will loan against $56M in security.

14. I could see my crazy workaholic husband doing something
like that. It's not just a job to him, it's a binding commitment and he really likes the guy he works for.

Still I'd slap him around a bit and yell "FIFTY-SIX MILLION!!!" Then I'd drive there and collect it anyway.

He'd probably still keep working, at least part-time.

18. one of the problems with the lottery are the smaller prizes-
Edited on Fri May-13-05 09:54 AM by LiberallyInclined
people win amounts around a couple-hundred thousand, and think that they can retire, and never work again- and in many cases many of the other family members feel the same way, and before they know what happened- the money's GONE.

lots of lottery winners end up broker than before, faster than you'd think.

19. Sounds like this guy might be one of the smart ones
Isn't dropping his job right away, isn't coming out right away. Good for him.

If I ever won the lottery, I wouldn't quit the job right away. First, I would set up a trust fund(with myself as the administrator) and let the trust fund collect the winnings. Less publicity that way, money goes into an interest bearing account, and I get to live off the interest. This would all take between three and six months. No biggy if I'm getting the big kahouna.
