70. Heh. No, seriously, (while I don't take astrology THAT seriously)
I've found that one of the hardest ways to say there's nothing to that field of divination is to look at how the sun signs of various presidents are freakishly appropriate for them. * for instance, is a Leo (sometimes known for arrogance, sloth and bravado--but also for intense loyalty and violent ferocity) with a Gemini rising sign (gotta watch those, in *, I think it's indicative of his duality and duplicity).

223. More Presidential Firsts
According to "Presidential Firsts," online at http://www2.lhric.org/pocantico/presidents/firsts.htm.

Theodore Roosevelt was the first President to ride in a car. He was the first American to receive a Nobel Prize. He received it in 1906 for helping to settle the Russo-Japanese War.

THE BEST PRESIDENT OF THEM ALL: Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the first to appear on television when he opened the New York World's Fair in 1939. He was the first President to appoint a woman, Frances Perkins, as a Cabinet member (Secretary of Labor.) He was also the first President to have a Presidential plane.

John F. Kennedy was the first Catholic elected President. He was also the first President who was a Boy Scout.

Biography of President William Jefferson Blythe IV

Snip

During the administration of William Jefferson Clinton, the U.S. enjoyed more peace and economic well being than at any time in its history. He was the first Democratic president since Franklin D. Roosevelt to win a second term. He could point to the lowest unemployment rate in modern times, the lowest inflation in 30 years, the highest home ownership in the country's history, dropping crime rates in many places, and reduced welfare roles. He proposed the first balanced budget in decades and achieved a budget surplus. As part of a plan to celebrate the millennium in 2000, Clinton called for a great national initiative to end racial discrimination

Edited on Sat May-14-05 07:33 AM by Fighting Irish
Hiram Ulysses Grant was the other. Upon entering West Point, he dropped the 'Hiram', since going to a prestigious military school with the initials 'HUG' was not very beneficial.

He went with 'Ulysses', and picked 'Simpson' as his new middle name.

But he didn't transpose his first and middle names. Ike did it to avoid confusion with his father.

269. The answer is nine.
Polk is/was the proverbial "dark-horse" candidate because he didn't even get one convention vote until the fifth ballot, and the rest of the time the party bosses spent trying to swing the nomination to him--because of his lack of name recognition, Polk was not controversial, and was determined to be the perfect candidate.
