per the irony for our REAL (eg human life and death) losses... and per the very behavior that led to this loss - being the same behavior that for a while drove one of our beloved REAL losses away from the community.

Different a thread ala "we miss x" - seen those never objected to it. This one - the tone - and the validation of the behavior that has been hurtful at other times to other very dear friends (that is the behavior from others - not from sniffa, and not in this situation) actually rubs a bit raw. Ya fucking RAW if you will.

You have to admit that Sniffa was loved and alot of people recognized his posts and threads.

I know some of you didnt know him but the guy was part of why I really enjoyed myself in Boston last month, sigh. Ive said my piece.

and the inability to coach him back from the edge per posting, even after he received warnings (I sometimes extend a hand to friends when I see posts that get perilously close via pms).

However.

His (and others) behavior - is exactly the behavior which a very dear and common friend at DU who died early this year, who I met in person, expressed to me - as having caused so much distress and frustration in the preprimary season - as to essentially driving him OUT of participating actively in DU for a stretch of time.

Thus.

Seeing things that are not just "I miss my buddy... ya I miss him too"

But instead sounding like Eulogies (those things we say/write when people die) in honor of someone who partook, apparently repeatedly in the very ugly and personal attack-like behavior that drove one of our late members out of the forum... time to reflect on what we value - who we respect.

Sorry my cards stand firm with Keph - and defending him in a way I did indirectly at the time (with posts per the dangers of the very personal, but organized attacks against supporters of different candidates) but that I didn't go for the direct route. This behavior sucks. Those who are not secure at DU are shut down and afraid to speak do to these ongoing antics. Among those we are shutting down may be the next Keph, or even John.

I have always respected you as a very bright, compassionate, objective young man. This moment in time, however, I don't see you in quite the same light. I see you as unintentionally getting caught up in some group behavior that is the same that was very, very hurtful to someone that I miss - not just from posting but from life.

So feel hurt and self justified. Or perhaps grow a little and try to see how some of the group "attack" behavior that got exceptionallly cruel, but was justified because the target was deemed to be "obnoxious". If I recall some folks were very ugly to supporters of Kucinich - and felt justified to act in concert, in ugly ways, because a few Kucinich supporters were deemed by their group to be very obnoxious and thus deserving. And if I recall other innocent bistanders, who also supported said candidate... felt very hit hurt and angry. And those were only the ones confident enough to speak out loud about it.

Well welcome to gleefully supporting the very behavior which stung.

Miss your freind, but lament the lack of control. Lament the baiting which led to it if you will. But to ignore there real cause here - is to become a party to that which used to upset the you just a bit more than a year ago.

I do respect and like you John. But the very sentiment that you express - is the same why I speak now. On behalf of a DUer that I met, that was very real to me, that I can NEVER speak to again, and who expressed real pain at the very behavior indulged in that led to this whole episode in the first place.

there is a subtext to this whole thing that is very painful and/or distasteful to some of us. I try to explain it below. I am not a typical "party pooper" and honestly do not think that people even realize some of the messages they are sending.

this poster feels towards someone he has never met. I saw his other posts in the other threads. They are bordering on the ridiculous. I'm not defending sniffa in any way shape or form. I want to remain neutral.

However, I do question this poster's animosity and negativity toward someone he has never met. What is his point? I am curious.

Your rules mean nothing... warnings - even public ones - they should be able to be defied... as long as it is just in response, to one that a group has decided is obnoxious enough to warrant breaking the rules and shoving it in your face less than 24 hours after a public warning per this exact behavior.

We don't believe you when you say there is a problem - and that many are concerned about the dysfunctional dynamics in the lounge. Nope, not our fault at all if some people feel chased out. Nope it was those two other people who had the power over us to make us completely ignore all the rules - because we are so cool that we are above them. Heck folks cheer. I get that you are sad at the loss of posting priveledges of your posting buddy. I also get that there is little comprehension as to why that loss occured, and sadly that means that approval of behavior in direct opposition to the rules is likely to continue given group validation and cheerleading when it gets close to the edge, but hasn't yet crossed it.

I also get that you want to have funeral posts - that mock the REAL losses (not willful losses of posting priveledges due to intentional behavior that could have been curbed, but was chosen after public warnings not to be curbed) - that we have had in the past six months.

Disgustingly enough, one of those losses, expressed at a time an unwillingness to post at DU due to the exceptionally hostile posting tactics of some in the primary season. He was so insulted by the very ganging up - and get personal in attacks behavior - that this beloved person got scarce... for months. Yep - this is a great way to honor that. Honor the very type of behavior that isolated him for a period of time before his UNCHOSEN fate of being lost to us - not by being willfully obnoxious and defiant, but by losing his life - real life.

You want to know where some of my anger on these martyr threads come from? There it is. Remembering experiencing the personal anguish of a dear DU friend at the hand of some people's behavior (same behavior that by CHOICE ended sniffa's posting priveledges) and then having that same behavior LAUDED - or MOURNED as if it is the same of the REAL loss that we experienced. And the undercurrent that we should defy (after a very public plea by Skinner) the civility rules - and instead go for intentional cruelty (again the very thing that pushed a 'late' Duer out of the forums for awhile)... and imply that Skinner is WRONG to try to help temper the tone of the forum that is simply alienating a whole lot of people.

Sorry the memory of a DU friend's experience, at the hand of the very behavior you are lauding, is painful. In the big picture - loss of posting priveledges on a message board is TRIVIAL compared to the loss of breathing, communicating, and living. Writing as if these are comparable, frankly, to some eyes, is slightly distasteful.

One will say "you have an axe to grind" - Yep - and in this thread I have laid it out for viewing.

I respect the sadness of the loss of posting fun with a friend on DU. I have been sad to see some folks be "goned" from the forum. But I have never equated that to real loss... or tried to hold up the epitome of the type behavior that has been personally so hurtful to other duers (including one late, beloved duer for awhile) to drive them out of their favorite forums... as being something to be praised endlessly while flaunting it in the face of the Admin who is actually trying to do something aboutt the tone of the discussion (which in the case I discuss had to be done on a more extreme level before conversation was "safe" for some to return.)

I didn't know sniffa. I have no personal axe to grind against sniffa. I do have issue with a number of these threads which in tone go much further than "I miss such and such and am sad they were tombstoned."
