How long does it take to become an "official" Yankee?
I'm a Southener, born and raised. But...I moved to Seattle at an early age, totally wiping out the accent. Then I lived in New Orleans (where everyone talks like they're from the Bronx) for 18 years. Now I've lived in New York State for 13/14 years and was wondering if I was a Yankee at this point, or if I would always be a Southener. For what it's worth, I get mistaken for a 'local' practically anywhere I go, be it Toronto or Eastern Europe.

1. I suspect you're always going to be a Southerner.
I was born in PA. and lived there for 42 years. We moved to SC in 1987, to TX in 1992, back to PA in 1998, and to GA in 2000. Unfortunately, now the People in PA consider me a southerner, and the people in the south consider me a yankee. It;s a lost cause!

I don't care! I believe the first title hing around my neck in 1987 was the definition of a "Damn Yankee"...a person who comes to the South...and STAYS!

2. Eh
I'm from upstate NY. We say if you're not born in the state, you're not a true Yankee. :)

On a side note, I always get mistaken for a local. Even in Spain.

Then the people realized my Spanish was slow and asked if I was from Mexico.

(i'm italian)

3. Hey, up here, you're not a Yankee unless you live in New England.
And then it takes a couple of generations.

I know that Southerners think anyone north of Maryland is a Yankee, but they don't get to make the definition. We Yankees do.

NOT INSULTING NEW YORKERS, but New Yorkers aren't Yankees, they're New Yorkers. (Except the guys who play on the baseball team, and that's only a job title, not a personal description.)

4. That's right, we're not
We're New Yorkers, and if someone doesn't like it, we're gonna gang up and kick some ass!

Would you call someone from Connecticut a Yankee? I would but then again, I'm from Queens.

6. Yes, Connecticutians (or would that be Connecticutters?) are
Yankees, even if they don't have the accent.

It's just geography. If you're in a New England state, you're in. Rhode Islanders don't have a New Englandy kind of accent either (and they drink coffee milk!), but they're included.

5. When I lived in Louisiana
they considered anybody north of I-10 to be Yankees. Oh yeah, and all of Georgia, all of Florida, Texas--nuthin' but Yankees there.

So by some definitions, if you from someplace more than 40 miles north of the Gulf you've always been a Yankee.

7. I don't know. I will always be a Midwesterner, no matter where I live.
