Parents of kids between the ages of 5-7 come hither !
I am so out of touch of what little kids are into these days . I am searching online for something to get my little cousin who will be turning 5 this coming Saturday . I don't want her to get her a toy toy , I am trying to find something that will keep her mind occupied as well . What are your kids into these days ? Is Dora the Explorer still cool ? Is Blue Clues played out yet ? LOL .

1. My daughter turned 5 in February
Some of her favorite things are activity books (dot-to-dot, color by number, etc.), puzzles, simple science experiments, dress-up clothing & accessories and pretend play.

She's really excited about starting school in the fall and likes anything that she perceives as helping her toward that goal. (i.e., educational videos, electronics that teach math and writing, workbooks)

One of her favorite birthday gifts was a small handbag with a tube of hand lotion, a kiddie perfume, a very light pink powder blush and a lip gloss. She also enjoyed: a fizzy aromatherapy bath ball; pretty pencils w/ matching erasers; sparkly hair clips; and a small box with a lock (for her collected treasures -- bottle caps, pretty rocks, character cards, etc.)

Characters she likes: Oswald, Max and Ruby (her absolute favorites), Little Bill, Clifford, Miss Spider and Maizy.

Hope this helps! At age five they're really not too picky at all.

2. I'll second Miss Spider
Totally cool books and show. My daughter is 3 1/2, but she thinks she is five, LOL!

She also likes to dress up, paint, and make up songs. Toys that are for outside use would be good. I know I said "toy", but I think if it is for outside use, that will definitely expand her mind.

Hope this helps! :hi:

4. Both of your suggestions were great !
Thank you for your help . I know she likes Dora The Explorer but knowing my little cousin , she is too cool and she has probably moved on . She is a " bag " lady , she has a dozen bags so I am gonna give her a gift box/bag full of fun stuff like books , candy and pencils as one of your suggested and the box/bag will something she could keep all collectibles in . Ahhh turning 5 , I did that 20 years ago ;)

3. Ask the parents. They might not be 'into' that TV based stuff. NT

5. For that age...
I highly recommend art supplies. Not Play Dough, it does bad things to carpeting, but just paints and paper, or some kind of cool markers.

Interesting types of building blocks (or rods, or other "connecting" toys) are always good; I would recommend going to one of those teachers supply stores rather than Toys R Us. The TV-based toys are the ones my kids always got tired of first.
