Can we declare a moratorium on declaring the last works of dead artists...
"masterpieces"?

I'm as bummed about the passing of Joe Strummer, Warren Zevon, Joey Ramone, and Johnny Cash as much as the next music fan, but the posthumous declarations of "album of the year" are starting to grate a bit here. Joey's last solo album was decent, but no masterpiece. Neither was The Wind, nor Streetcore. The jury's still out on the sixty odd unreleased Johnny Cash tracks, but I'm sure there's no latter day "Ring Of Fire"'s lurking in there.

I'm all for giving these guys their props, but the inflated critical praise in lieu of flowers has to stop.

1. Ah, but Kevin Gilbert's last album WAS a masterpiece!
Even non-critics agree. Perfection. Genius.

But that's just me. :)

2. Whatever you say, but...
Johnny Cash WAS the man. Long before he died, I felt that he was the best country/folk singer around. Of course, my sentiments have nothing to do with the fact that my dad listened to nothing but Johnny Cash everytime we all got in a vehicle together. So, I have known JC ever since I was born, was spoon fed him as a kid, loved him as an adult, and am so sad he died.

He was great; no one in country music even compares now. All of the legends are passing.

5. He's the second best country musician of all time
I think you're missing my point: Johnny Cash was immensely influential. His influence transcends genre, as even many hip hop artists have said they were influenced by Johnny. After Hank Williams Sr., he's the greatest country musician of all time in my estimation.

But...the upcoming box set, from what I understand, is only going to have the Def American/Rick Rubin recordings in it, and trendy as they may be, they still don't hold up to his original Sun singles, or even some of his Nashville assembly line stuff.

3. I got your point...
and would agree that HW Sr. was the only one better.

4. I'm in complete agreement
Post-mortem hyperbole is as old as funeral ceremonies, but this should be reined in. Marketing departments everywhere, take note!

6. Can we call them 'collector's items'?
Stock up now! No more where this came from!

7. what about the Exploding Hearts?
Guitar Romantic is the best rock album I've heard all year - it beats the hell out of any other retro rock act out there.

And three of their members died in July in a van accident. Unless I find something better, I'm planning to list their sole release as the Album of the Year.

8. That's an exception to the rule
That album is fucking fantastic, and it really bums me out that three of them are dead now. If this were the 70s, that album would become the source of a myriad of urban legends.
