Devo Live DVD coming soon. Here's a preview.
For Immediate Release
April 29, 2005

DEVO
LIVE 1980
Available on DVD

July 12, 2005

Through Music Video Distributors

Oaks, PA- Music Video Distributors and Devo Inc. are pleased to announce the home viewing release of the DEVO - Live
1980 for worldwide distribution on DVD.

This concert is testament that DEVO was much more than an MTV band, they were a brilliant live act. This DVD includes
a full length concert from 1980 supporting their breakthrough album Freedom of Choice. This is DEVO at their very
peak.

Although hard to fathom nowadays, there was a time when there was no MTV. In fact, rock music visuals on TV were
usually delegated strictly to the weekend, when you had to burn the midnight oil to catch Saturday Night Live, Don
Kirshner's Rock Concert, the Midnight Special, or Friday's. And mostly, it was either straight-ahead live performance
footage, or else blah lip-synched stuff, with the musicians playing to an empty arena on the afternoon of a show. This
all changed with DEVO.

Even if you missed catching DEVO live and 'in the flesh,' you had a decent chance to see them on the tube, as they
were one of the few acts to appear on all of the aforementioned programs. The only problem was that bands were only
given a handful of songs to perform on these shows. That's where Live 1980 comes in handy. It's becoming rare nowadays
for full-length shows to have survived from this era, but that's what this DVD is all about - a full-length live set,
just as Whip It was beginning to make DEVO a household word. And while all the group's hits up to this point are
included, hardcore spuds will enjoy such run-throughs of the obscurities It's Not Right, Pink Pussycat, and Swelling
Itching Brain.

8. I'm pretty sure they played in Edmonton around 1979
but sadly I missed it.

I hear they're playing the Bumbershoot in WA later this year, though...

3. Sweet Jesus, thank you!
I've got the more recent performances they've released on DVD. The Lollapalooza show, in particular, kicks huge amounts of ass. But this is going to be incredible.

4. I saw them in the early eighties, too.
They are awesome.

I still love them.

Their show was choreographed, but artistically, not idiotically.

B-)

I remember DEVO in the late '70's. They were a trip then and they are now...DADA!

6. DADA was the response to the horrors of WWI
DEVO was the response to Kent State.

Both are thought of as purely artistic abusurdists

Both have much more political content than they are given credit for.

11. Just read that Gerry Casale witnessed the shootings?

I guess the timeframe would be about right, and the geography certainly. Interesting tidbit.

(Gerry Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were the primary creative forces behind DEVO.)

7. DEVO was vastly underrated
Edited on Mon May-16-05 10:58 PM by gmoney
I saw their live show on the tour that became the "Now it can be told" CD, and it was dynamite.

They just re-relased "New Traditionalists" on the Collectables label (www.oldies.com) ...hard to believe they're now an "oldies" act, but it's worth tracking down. Highlights include "Through Being Cool", "Race of Doom", and "Beautiful World".

Thanks for the tip on the DVD release!

P.S. ...and Cube(Squared) rock the most, too!

9. Coincidentally, I just bought "The Complete Truth About De-Evolution"
on DVD.

They were amazing, especially considering the era.

10. I bought that myself about a year ago.
It's a good one, especially for including the quirky laserdisc ads, and the ancient performance at...Kent University, I think?

12. I saw them on that tour
and on the "Oh No, It's DEVO!" tour stop at my school, on which they got arrested for talking trash to the cops who were trying to keep people from dancing in the aisles and blocking the exits (fire hazard, ya know). That was an amazing show.

I've seen them twice more since. Best dance band in the world, back then. :)

13. Tuvor, you're a real Spudboy, aren't you!
I had no idea you were such a huge fan.

Do you have the Smart Patrol PC game? How about the Devo puppet theatre?

They had some great promo stuff, back in the day. I have some bootlegs and promo 7"/12" singles...

14. I'm a geek for them.
Edited on Mon May-16-05 11:50 PM by tuvor
I confess.

But I don't have much of any of the paraphernalia. Well, none, really. Never into videogames after dropping hundreds of dollars in quarters on Moon Patrol and Tron at university when I should've been studying.

"Devo puppet theatre"? That's a totally new one to me. Must google that one. (Hmm, getting nothing on Google, no matter how I spell "theatre".)

I can't put my finger on why, but I never tire of listening to them. Well, I admit I start to lose enthusiasm around New Traditionalists, but the first three albums--it's just amazing that they ever got the distribution they got in the first place.

ON EDIT: Damn, CA, your sig pics lately...!
