Man Drank Coors So Budweiser Fired Him
<snip>

MILLIKEN, Colo. -- He worked for a Budweiser distributorship in Colorado -- but says that didn't mean he couldn't pop open a Coors while off-duty.

But Ross Hopkins says he was fired from the distributorship two years ago, after being seen drinking Coors in a bar.

Hopkins has sued American Eagle Distributing, saying it has no right to tell him what to drink when he's off-duty.

The distributorship's lawyer won't go into specifics, but says there are "two sides to every story."

The distributorship isn't directly challenging the claim that Hopkins was fired as a supervisor at least in part for drinking Coors in public. Its court response says he was let go for conduct relating to a "bona fide occupational requirement."

11. Coors is one of the leaders in donating to Rethug causes,
candidates & PACs.

Drink blue: Sam Adams & Harpoon are two local (for me) breweries.

2. I can understand this...
Look, folks, if you don't like to drink Bud, maybe you shouldn't get a job delivering it.

3. Why?
He's a delivery person. If I worked for a company that published romance novels, should I only read romance novels? It's not like he's a paid endorser - that I can see. It's just his job.

8. So I could be fired for shopping at a supermarket other than the one
Edited on Tue May-17-05 05:31 PM by skygazer
I work at? Because I represent my store?

That's nonsense. If he was paid to endorse the product, I could see the logic. He is being paid to work there, just as I am paid to stock the shelves of my store. No one can tell me where to shop.

edited - for some reason, I thought the original article said he was a delivery person, but I see he was a supervisor. I still do not see that as giving the company the right to tell him to drink their swill.

12. I work for an HMO yet support universal health care for all
regardless of age and income. Does that mean that if I attend a rally in support of universal health care. I should be fired?

What you choose to do in your off time should be none of your employer's business if it does not affect the way you perform you job.

22. He works for this company
He represents himself while on his own time! When our jobs tell us what to do while off the clock...our country will be in even more trouble than it already is. Freedom?

9. Well, they shouldn't own us.
But they act as if they do. And unlike us, they have the resources to get bigger lawyers and congressmen to make their whims a reality.

They do own us.

14. I believe it's the same for Coke and Pepsi workers.
It's in the contract or something. The cola and beer wars are fiercely competitive.

and is less valuable to make good business decisions.
