EEEWWWWWW!
I just saw the trailer for Johnny Depp's new movie, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and he looks really creepy! (For some inexplicable reason, he reminds me of Michael Jackson after all that plastic surgery, LOL!)

Why did they have to screw with a classic film? I know it's not a remake of Willy Wonka (this film is based on the original book), but still ... every kid grew up with Wonka - why spoil that memory?

Give me Gene Wilder any day! :loveya: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is one of my all-time favorite movies!

1. I was told it was originally a dark book.
that the movie was made into this happy go lucky place. They might just be sticking to the original.

8. Exactly
The new film is based on the dark book, not on the "happy" Gene Wilder movie.

I know that people who loved the book hated the Willy Wonka movie because it wasn't dark - but I'm the opposite: I LOVED the movie and I have no desire to see a "dark" version of Wonka.

In any case, I still think that Depp looks really creepy - and it's not a cool kind of creepy like "Edward Scissorhands" - it's just plain creepy, LOL!

2. Why did Gene Wilder's movie screw up a classic dark tale
Edited on Tue May-17-05 01:17 PM by LynneSin
Seriously, read the book and you'll see the Gene Wilder was a cleaned up perky version of a very dark book. Tim Burton is staying true to the tome and I'm looking forward to it

10. As I said in my original post
I know it's not a remake - this film is based on the book, not the Wilder movie. But ... I read the book once and I saw the movie about a thousand times, LOL! So obviously, Wilder's version is the one that's close to my heart. :loveya:

4. I love Willy Wonka!
It's up there on my all-time favorite list, too. The only part that freaked me out (and kinda still does) is the scene where they're on the ferry boat and all of those creepy images pop up in the background. Yikes! :scared:

6. THEY ARE NOT CHANGING STUFF - I wouldn't even call this a remake
Read the book - The Gene Wilder movie is a far cry from the actual book!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please do not associate "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" with the new movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Tim Burton is doing the movie to better reflect what the book has written whereas the Gene WIlder movie was a much different variaion from the book. Hell they even changed the name of the Gene WIlder movie using "Willy Wonka" instead of "Charlie" as the name.

I first read "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" back when I was 6 years old (I was a very advance reader). So when I finally saw Gene WIlder's "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" I was extremely disappointed at how far they strayed away from the book. My hopes is that Tim Burton will stay true to the book in his version :D and especially get rid of those annoying songs!!

7. Because they didn't want to screw with the classic book.
 So far it looks truer to the book than that other film which I don't really care for.

11. You know what's funny?
Edited on Tue May-17-05 01:47 PM by BattyDem

There are literally two completely different groups of people who love Wonka: the book lovers and the movie lovers. I have NEVER met anyone who loves both.

It's weird ... I know plenty of people who love certain books and may not like the movie versions as much, but they don't hate them. There are also people who love certain movies and dislike the original books, but again - they don't hate the book, they just prefer the movie.

But with this book/film, there are two extreme camps: movie lovers and book lovers .. and there's no middle ground, LOL! I wonder why that is?

13. It is funny. I am one of those rarities who actually hate "The Shining"
as directed by Kubrick, and yet I really liked the miniseries as directed by King himself...most disagree with me. :hi:

15. Don't get me started with "The Cider House Rules"
:scared:

I'm very nervous as to what they'll do with "Memiors of a Geisha" but I have a feeling they'll do justice to "The DaVinci Code"
