4. Try the GIMP
http://www.gimp.org/

It's hard to use, but don't necessarily let that stop you! Plus it's free (and legally so) but that doesn't mean it's no good.

9. the 'lite' edition is ok if you are just fooling around
and it is reasonably priced. Otherwise either use gimp or pony up for the full suite.

10. Get the Gimp
Hard to use? Not any harder than Photoshop. Lots of tutorials on the internet. Lot's of brushes and other cool freebies.

Get the Gimp and stop supporting Adobe's over-priced bloatware. :-)

11. If you don't want to pay for Photoshop
Edited on Tue May-17-05 04:44 PM by hyphenate
which, BTW, is probably a little bit more intense and complex than most people really need, there are alternatives.

Paint Shop Pro is excellent, for example, and rather than the overblown price of Photoshop, it's available for under $100. In fact, go over to eBay, and you can usually snag a copy for about $25. One friend got a slightly older version for $10 because someone had misspelled the name (which meant it wasn't coming up in the regular search of listings)!

ArcSoft and Corel both produce versions as well, and in shareware, there are a lot of different graphic programs. Depends, again, on what you want to use it for. Are you a professional graphic artist, who needs a superior program for both print and web graphics? Or are you itching to get some techniques for having fun with pics of * and just want to mess with it? Many can do the latter without that $600 price figure.

Try overstock.com as well. There are lots of sites that sell older versions at a discount when a new version is issued. You might also want to check at http://graphicdesign.about.com for some advice and suggestions--they're the premiere site for all things on the web, as well as for much of what's in real life, too. And I wouldn't pass up going to http://www.epinions.com for looking at reviews and suggestions there.

Hope that helps.

13. Same here. Or low cost that isn't a bogus "OEM" scam.
Works great in WINE, I gather. And eminently more effective than GIMP.

Photoshop as it is priced, is tantamount to extortion, but worth the money depending on your needs.
