1. "Hear, hear!"
It is a command, exhorting people around to hear what the speaker has said.

2. It's "hear hear"
Based on the practice of someone standing up and loudly proclaiming something, and another person exclaiming "hear hear!" to make sure it is heard, and reinforced. Used kind of like a secular "amen". :-)

There is a distinct relationship between the "hear hear!", words related to our sense of sound, and that it is calling attention to something that was spoken.

6. Hi there, Neoma...
I truly HATE to sound at all negative, but every time I see your stair picture, I cringe...If only it weren't moving...I hope I'm not offending you, though!

37. No, not at all! Perhaps you didn't see the earlier pic...
It showed a profile of a staircase, with a cartoon figure falling, no, tumbling down. I found it oddly painful to look at, and impossible to avoid...I finally decided to speak to Neoma about it. And she changed it to the ping pong image, which is wonderful!

8. I'm toLd that it was originaLLy 'hear him'
And was shouted in ParLiament to exort other members to Listen to what a particuLar speaker was saying. Of course that may be apocryphaL.

What ever, it's now 'hear hear'.

9. Both.
"Hear hear" means something akin to "listen up" -- or perhaps "note these words".

"Here Here" means something akin to "wait a minute" -- or perhaps "no". (From "look here", perhaps.)

"Here, here, don't do that."

Or so I have taken it from context.

11. Anybody who has kids knows it's both!
When you want them to come somewhere (such as the dinner table), you say come here, come here and when they don't listen you eventually say HERE, HERE

And if you are talking to one and they sit or stand there sort of like dubya in the school on 9/11, you say do you hear me?, do you hear? and that eventually ends up, HEAR, HEAR

12. it depends
if you are expressing your approval for a speech, it's "hear, hear." If you are answering roll call, it is "here, here."

i know you didn't start the thread. i happen to be a grammar nazi myself but not when it comes to message boards, especially since i don't pay much attention to my grammar when i'm posting here. i just thought it was too much of a coincidence that i made that mistake yesterday and someone posts a thread about it today. i'm one of the oversensitive ones.

They're ready to leave on their trip to go there to enjoy themselves.

Did you break the brakes on the car?

I saw it today, right here on DU.

It was about death--so the poster could have meant 'death by grizzly(bear)', I suppose.

42. Can I add? It's "you've got another THINK coming".... NOT
"You've got another THING coming."

I don't care how many times it's used incorrectly, or who is using it incorrectly.

It is THINK, not THING.

Look at the whole phrase: "If you think <insert thought here>, you've got another think coming."

"Thing" doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Thank you.
