ATMs are down all over town--solar storm effect?
Does anyone know if the ATMs aren't working because of the solar storm?

2. Pacific
It's 2:18 am. Tech support at the grocery store was flummoxed.

3. My guess would be that the banks are doing the whole "batch processing"
thing, and thus can't do regular ATM transactions.

4. How often do they do that?
The people at the grocery store called the ATM tech support line and they didn't have an answer for what's going on or how long it'd take...

5. I would think once a week
at the least, perhaps daily. I know the bank by phone service at my bank is unavailable from like 1:00 - 4:00 AM every day, Most banks still do not process transactions in real time, so things get moved to batch processing.

13. Batch processing is usually once per day (night)
Batch settlement usually happens once, sometimes twice, per day. But debit authorizations are usually nearly instantaneous.

Whatever the problem with the ATM's in your city, I don't think it had anything to do with the 2nd largest card processor, since I work for them and my life would be miserable if that were the case.

I work for a processor in Louisville, KY. We were bought last year by a really big bank.

What sort of work do you do? I'm a network engineer.

14. Batch processing is done off-line.
It doesn't affect on-line transactions.

6. Why not just a systems failure at the bank or in communications network

No need to involve extraterrestial causes

11. Actually, you can make a respectable wireless antenna

from a Pringles can because of the lining.

Don't think it works at the higher speeds but ....

15. If they are satellite-connected ATMs, it's *possible*
That said, it's unlikely. The ATMs are probably connected via TCP/IP (over essentially the same infrastructure via which your computer is connected to the internet) or SNA. Dedicated circuits, frame relay clouds, that kinda crap. Or dial-up connections.

There's probably a circuit down somewhere.

18. I just went to my ATM also
First it said that the machine is out of money, then when I tried to deposit some it sat there for about 2 minutes, then said that they could not process the transaction.
